What gaskets fail that lead to hydrolocking in the 4.2L? Intake plenum only?

Rick, your ticking noise can be one of many things; a stuck lifter, exhaust leak, the fuel injectors,etc.....
Are you replacing the gaskets yourself?

Yes, and it dosen't look very bad on the 4.2, but I'd be kind of dreading it on the 4.6 or 5.4.

HEY UR ticking sound can Also be from a Cracked Spark PLUG!!
IF ur wire is burned or cracked, the current is gonna pass through it and make that noise. I would check all wires, just to make sure.

Make sure you get the correct torque specs from Ford; the Haynes and Chiltons manuals are incorrect! Also, change the oil "before" cranking the engine! Excess coolant and gasket debris can find its way into your oil pan during the gasket replacement procedure! BTW,this would be a good time to clean the EGR ports and IMRC runners on the lower intake!

I cant remember but if you call your local Ford dealer they will give you a printout of the TSB on the lower intake gaskets revision. It gives you the torque specs along with special instructions on the revised gasket installation.
