i am getting about 12 miles to a 1/4 tank of gas! either someone is syphoning my gas out, or that = something wrong...and its not my pcv elbow(just had it replaced), but there is a subtle hiss..

He said 12 miles to a 1/4 tank of gas (1/4 tank is about 6 gallons).

That's 2 mpg.

If you are getting 2 mpg, that's a whole different set of problems than if you are getting 12 mpg.

It will get better. I got my truck with 1.5 miles on it, drove it home which is 95 miles from dealership, and used almost a tank of gas. I about had a heart attack. But now, i have almost 5,000 miles and its getting about 14 or so mpg. Dealership says it should all be straightened out by 6,000. (If they know what there talking about, im not sure)

I bought 4.2 6cyl 05 xl in march, thinking ill get decent gas mileage, in exchange for performance..i put a magna flow exhaust on after the first week..and lighter 20 inch tires..
result a nice looking dog of a truck..I couldnt believe how bad it performed, AND How bad the gas mileage was..Always heavy on the pedal on the highway trying not to get runover by everyone..22 gal tank..best I got was 300 all highway..usually got about 250 which translates to 13.6-11.36

COUldnt deal with it anymore..traded it in to Ford this week..took a beating on the trade..got an 5.4 xlt..

I would of stayed with the 6 maybe, if there where some performance parts out there for it..but the after market peoiple are skipping over this one..its a 1/2 ton truck with a small 6..bewtter to get the ranger if you go this route in my opinion..simply underpowered..see if you cant take advantage of the family plan and get out out of the truck if you can afford it..the amount of money you'll put into tyring to get it up to par..you can use as a down pay on a new 5.4

good luck!

There's plenty of performance in that "little" V-6. Granted, I have a more positive spin on the whole thing...

So, when I first got it (2000) brand new, i'd get 11-12 mpg like you. Now, on a short trip I took this past sunday, I got slightly over 20mpg. 190 miles on 8.9 gallons, you do the math. That's topped off tank to topped off tank, exact same gas pump, so no funny business there. The drive was rolling hills, some passing and downshifts for the hills. AC was on most of the time, on the second lowest setting.

almost 80k miles on my girl, and still lovin 'er! With my last oil change about 1k miles ago, I used an oil and fuel additive package promising "micro-lubrication" and cleaning. I have used a fuel additive every oil change, but this one made the difference. Figures, can't recall the name of it off the top of my head.

Looking to replace the plugs and wires soon, add a jacobs kit and electric fans. After all is said and done, I'm hoping same trip to give me 22mpg.

Performance mods...
Magnaflow si/do exhaust.
JBA headers
Superchip
Open airbox
