Question Avoid Sweet Deal on '98 4.2 Due to Gasket Problem?

Due to a death in the family, I have a chance to buy a 1998 F-150 STX 4.2L for $7500. It only has 23,000 miles! I've been test driving it this week, and remembered this online community from when I owned an F-150 previously.

I've learned all about the gasket failures, and now find myself trying to make a heck of a choice: do I walk away (and keep driving my Ford Escape with 2 years and 50,000 miles left in warranty coverage) or do I go ahead and buy the 4.2L, watch my coolant levels, and pray for the best?

Due to my work commute, there is no way I'll put less than 25,000 miles per year on the truck, so the duty level it has known to this point is about to grow exponentially.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

(By the way, the engine sticker has 9/4/97 build date.)

With that engine build date you are clear of the timing cover gasket problem. But,the lower intake gaskets will be a problem. If it were me,ide buy the truck and replace the lower intake gaskets.

I beleive it to be a good Idea to purchase the truck with the advice of BlueOvalfitter. When will you ever come across a good truck overall, with only 23000 miles on it!?
Where is it, I'll buy it if you don't?

I'm in the same situation as you. I have looked at and drove a 98 F150 with 43,000 miles for $6500. Its super nice and to good to pass on. I gave the dealer $500 to hold it for me until my tax returns come in.

I'll have to get back with you on the engine build code. I should be getting the truck in a couple of days. I'll post it as soon as I find out.
Thanks you, Joe
