My truck is a 2001 F-150 XL 4.2 Reg Cab 5spd.
I've had the truck for almost a year and here is what has been done to it since i've had it.

Coil
Plugs
Wires
Brakes 3 times
ABS Motor broken

Entire Clutch assembly 86 000 km
Altenator - 114 000 km

I've put just over 40,000km on it in almost a year, i'm sitting at 86k right now... I think I am having the worst luck with my baby.

I have the exact same truck as you do and never had any problems except for a leaky rear-end pinion seal. My truck has 49,500 miles on it. Maybe you got a lemon?

right now I have about 86k km on it which is about 54,000 miles.
I'm thinking I did get a lemon.....nothing but money going into that thing.

I had a 98 V6, reg cab short box auto that did me 220,00 when I traded it for the 04 Crew (have a child, needed the room)

I did tie rods and ball joints at around 180,000. Gaskets never failed, no issues other than the rattling heat shield that I just never bothered to fix (only rattled at 750 rpm) rotors replaced once. Pads replaced twice. Rear pads replaced twice.

I beat the ever living snot out of that truck so I would expect the suspension components to need replacement (I like to hit potholes on purpose at high speed)

Other than that, routine maintenance.

97 XL,LWB,auto,107k miles
new alternator at 106k miles
u-joints at 102k miles
front and rear brakes at 100k miles
lower intake gaskets replaced at 79k miles
front brakes at 65k miles
new slider replaced by Ford at 64k miles
This is a very trouble free truck.I also tend to over do my preventive maintenance, but I think it helps the truck stay in the shape it is!

I'm about to turn 90,000 miles.

My '99 4.2 has been very reliable. No motor troubles whatsoever, though my mileage has gone down lately (may be plugs, plug wires, PCV or EGR - need to track that down this weekend).

Oil & filter every 5,000 miles. Clean K&N air filter every 15,000. New tranny fluid and coolant every 30,000. Changed the differential fuild at 50,000. New plugs at 60,000.

Replaced the stock shocks at about 11,000 miles (they still had life in them but they sucked).

Replaced stock tires about 61,000 miles - still had a little tread left, but the stock tires sucked.

Still on the stock rear brake shoes; the front pads lasted until 43,000 miles; have done them three times since then (bought a cheap pair of pads that did not last long once; put ceramics on at 81,000). Put new front rotors on at 81,000 miles.

Now, my ABS light is going on intermittantly, so I may have a bad sensor there.

Pretty low cost for 90,000 miles.

First truck was a 97 V6 supercab sold at 43k miles, only replace power mirror switch under warrenty. Second truck is a 2000 V6 supercab replaced power mirror switch under warrenty (damn mirror switches). Have 36k on the 2000 and have replaced nothing else due to breakage or failure. My brother bought a black V6 supercab 97 model when I bought my first one, towed a car trailer about 60 times 100 mile round trips always loaded coming back. He replaced bad spark plug wires at 102k, rear drum brakes at 110k, front about 15k later and water pump at 135k. My brothers engine started knocking about two months after the water pump deal but he did run the crap out of that truck, riding with him I would feel like I was living on the edge, with or without trailer. Three sets of brakes in 40,000 kilometers I think is unheard of, I wonder if their is another issue that is being over looked. Tire installer warping rotors with a impact during tire rotation, slide rails sticking or caliper pistons sticking that has not been addressed. Wires, coil and plugs all went out at the same time or did you just want to replace them all.

J-150 how hard is that heat shield to fix, mine only does it in 1st and second gear when I'm taking off but its that rattle that I would guess is the heat shield.

Also how much can that PCV vaulve effect gas milage, cause I have 56k on mine and its never been changed as far as I know, but I'm currently getting like 14-16MPG.

As I said earlier ( I think) I just had my whole clutch assembly replaced. The dealership took 4 days to do everything because I had seized bolts on pretty much everything they had to remove (according to the machinest) and now my heat shield rattles as well. I have a custom exhaust on my truck which pisses me off cause if rattles in first and second gear....sometimes third depending on how low the RPMs are. Rather then hearing the nice sound of my exhaust, I hear this stupid rattle. What do you have to do to fix it, other then rip the B!$%h off cause that is what i'm about to do.
