there are 3 ways to fix heat sheilds all are cheap fixes. the best way is to get a big hose clamp or 2 and tighten them down real good on the heat sheilds. if the little tag in the heat sheild is rattling you can dig it out with a screw driver. and the last recomondation is to just remove the heat sheilds.

I've got 60k miles on my '01 F150, all I've done is:
Change spark plugs.
Change front brake pads.
Flushed and changed coolant.

I'm going to have to replace the clutch soon though, I do some towing.

There's a heat shield plate above the cats and muffler right under the body of the truck, there's also ones bolt under the cats.

is it a big deal if you remove the one that is above the muffler?? I mean obviously its called a heat shield for a reason, but is it something that shouldn't be tampered with or is it just a safety precausion that can be taken off?

2002 F-150 30k Miles

Problems
Broken Seatbelt
Broken 02 sensors (2 times)
Power Driver window went out once
Rear window seal came off once
Running rich once
Left rear leaf spring (replaced 4 times)
Right rear leaf spring (replaced 3 times)

Truck has basically been &^$%, but I'm currently working with ford and the dsb to do something about it, hopefully they will purchase it back so I can get a new 05. Worse case senario I get an extended warranty and sell it down the line for a new 1. This has been my 4th ford, and the 1st one to have problems. I just got a lemon.

Cool None yet Knock wood

I must of gotten a strange one? The only problem I have had sence new was the rear window seal was coming off from bad glue. It was fixed under warranty.
I have a 2002 xl v6 /5 speed with 68,000 and no problem at all. I plan on keeping it till 200,000 or more. Just did the oil and fluids changes.Still running on original tires.
More dependable then the Sushi Grinders.
Definatly more class and keep the dollar in the USA

You are lucky that yours is still under warranty....my ABS light is on and I can't afford to get it fixed at the moment. Had an estimate given to me....over $1000 for the part and then labour on top of that.

Taylor - you should search in the brake froum regarding the ABS light. There is apparently a sensor (under $30 at Auto Zone) and an easy install that can cause the ABS light problem.

FWIW, there are disreputable repair shops out there that will prey upon your fears about safety. This is used all the time to sell unnecessary or overpriced brake repairs. 'Free Vehicle Inspections' are often used as a way to reel the suckers in for unnecessary brake work.
