Simple Question, Simple Answer:

I live in a very windy area that kicks up lots of dirt into the air......

I know that a quality air filter will keep that dirt out of my engine, but what kind of maintenance will I need to do to a air intake system to keep it performing good? Will the performance gains be worth any additional maintenance?

Of course, I assume this mod does not void the warranty.

Thanks!

Air Intakes

those high performance cold air intakes you buy are a waste of money, you don't get any better performance, yes it makes a roaring sound, that sound only makes you think ur getting more power, when ur really not, and those air filters you have to buy that fit on that new air intakes are junk too, the micron opening on those air filters are larger, allowing more dirt to get in ur engine. The ONLY way to increase engine performance is to increase the fuel volume, with a turbo, and headers.

As you can see in pictures on the web, holes in an individual layer of dry K&N filter material are in fact bigger than the holes in a paper filter. However, the K&N has many layers of fine guaze which are coated in oil to trap the dirt. A particle of dirt is going to have to zig zag through all the oil coated layers to get through, so the filter is quite effective.

I know ranchers who swear by K&N. They also regularly service the filters. A K&N WILL save you money over time, which is a big part of its appeal.

A question was previously asked about maintenance of the K&N included with most of the FIPKs. It's easy - take the filter out (1 hose clamp), spray the K&N cleaner on to dissolve the oil. Let sit or 10 minutes. Rinseout the filter from the inside with a garden hose. Let it dry. Spray the K&N filter oil on lightly. Reinstall (1 hose clamp). Some down time due to drying, but VERY easy service.

As far as adding power, in addition to the extra intake noise, I am convinced the Airaid added power on my truck (which had some other mods such as Superchip), but only at high rpm (3,000+). I agree there was absolutely no power increase at low rpm.
