Dumb here, so be nice please.

The solenoid has 4 posts. One to the battery, one to the starter, one that has the letter "I" by it and one that has the letter"S" by it. I'm assuming the letter "I" stands for ignition and the letter "S" stands for starter.

'84 F-150, inline 6-cylinder


Question #1- Which post hooks up on the solenoid that has a letter, "I" or "S"? and does the other need to be hooked up.


Question #2- Is it true that I can turn the key backwards and pull the ignition switch out of the steering column?

You should have nothing hooked up to the I terminal. The S terminal is the wire that energizes the solenoid when you turn the key to start. This needs to be hooked up.

No. The ignition cylinder can be removed by turning it to run, not start. Then push the pin in under the switch inside the little hole on the column and pull outwards on the switch.

Thankyou so much for your help. Just an answer in the right direction helps. Hopefully that'll get me heading in the right direction of why my truck isn't starting.

Haven't tried the key thing but I will and I'll post back to let you know.

Can't figure out the ignition switch thing.

And I tried hooking up a starter switch by running one wire to the battery post on the solenoid and running another wire to the starter post on the solenoid. It burnt up my switch. Got real hot. What seems to be the reasoning behind this?

I touched the cable going to my starter to the hot battery post and it cranked over. That's why I thought I could just hook up the wires like that.

This is so aggravating, GGRRRRR!!!!!!!
