in 96 they still used the 300 cu inch straight 6.
This motor was bulletproof. Bag the ever livin' ***** out of it and still log hundreds of thousands of miles on it.
My dad's 89 F150 with the 300 I6 has 410,000 miles. Only thing he has to replace on the engine was one valve spring that broke at about 350,000 miles. Tranny is still original, but he has gone threw about 5 clutches and one input shaft bearing.
I have my 99 4.2 at nearly 180K. It had nitrous on it for the first 70K or so and has been dragraced and used for everything else a truck is used for. It runs great except for a spitting a plug out now and then. As a matter of fact I towed my 96 Mustang 350 miles today and it performed flawlessly. If you really wanna know some thing awesome: It still has the stock clutch

112,000 hard and reckless miles in four years. I drive to and from peoples homes working on their kitchens in a different city each week. I am most of the time running late and use my right foot to adjust my arrival time. My truck will run 85 and more all day long if I tell it to with O.D. off or on. This truck has proved over and over again how faithful it is. Ive got this truck loaded with tools and materials half way up my back window always and still I rarely get passed. I can turn off O.D. going 80+ accelerate and pass another vehicle and engage O.D. again with no problems. I found out I did not have to worry about perhaps over reving the motor taking it out of O.D. one day. I ran up on some traffic one day and took it out of the O.D. to help slow vehicle down as I always do. I had my favorite metallica blasting and when traffic was back up to speed I returned to my normal cruising speed 80 or 85. The motor was roaring but I could only hear my radio and was not aware O.D. was not engaged. I was noticing that passing vehicles in my way was very easy and quickly accelerated to 90,95 as I moved around folks. I drove this way for about 45 minutes until traffic slowed once again. I reached to disengage O.D. when I noticed it was off my whole trip.I fill up about every three days with shell reg 87 since I drove off the lot.Ive changed the oil when I remember from 3000 to sometimes around 5000 mile intervals. Walmart stocks the motorcraft 5-20 oil and filters. I had to replace my brake master cylinder around 70,000. I dont know why it gave out since I try not to use my brakes very often. Believe it or not If I am following someone I leave enough room between us so if he brakes I disengage O.D. and slowly get closer until I need to accelerate again. It took me awile to get my master c. installed resulting from my ignorance. The auto store needed to order the part from their whse.It took Three days for the part to arrive and when I tried to install the brake lines to it they did not match up. I was supposed to give the answer four wheel disk when asked what kind of brake system I had. I had said disk in front and drum in rear. Three more days to order part again. Now I refilled resevoir and began to figure how to bleed system by myself. My father and me used to do this on his vehicles but I was always on the dumb end inside pumping away and holding down brake pedal faithfully. I would have asked my girlfreind but we tried to do this on her car once before and failed over and over. I finnally told her that we were done and she could go back inside. ( I lied ) I figured out later on that it was'nt her fault I guess in her school they never learned the phases "OK pump it up" "Hold it Hold it" "Now follow the pedal down and hold it until I say "OK again pump it up keep pumping". I purchased a fluid extractor for my truck and completed the job alone from underneath.Im currently figuring out how to take out my pcv valve without damaging related vac lines and surrounding parts. I just can't seem to get myself in the motor compartment far enough to really see what I'm tugging on and afraid I'll wreck something. O.K. lets finish. The truck definitly can take abuse. When I drive like a human being I get killer milage close to twentyone with my only mod the K&N air filter downhill and wind at my back cruising 55 and 60 with my girlfreind constantly telling me to slow down. It corners like a slot car.I came to an interesting little comparision. If you have ever played a racing game on one of these playstation units people say alot "Wow playing this game it really feels like your driving a real car it's so realistic" I like to say ""wow my truck feels just like I was racing on a video game. Ive had a slight mishap with a guardrail after a first rain, one ticket for speeding on hwy17 to Santa Cruz Boardwalk, one commuter lane violation, and just recently a driving the wrong way in Monterey trying to avoid going up aways to the light to make a legal u turn. This truck has no limits except when it shuts down at 100. The first time that it shut down like that I thought I had fried the motor but soon after it came back to life again and I was relieved. The next week I went by Bob Lynch Ford Dealer musterd up the courage to ask the sales fella how come my truck shuts down at 100. He explained the rev limiter thing to me and also aftermarket chips that disable the ****ion. I don't think I'll ever perform the super chip mod could be a little to much for the truck and its irresponsible driver.Sure is temping .I mean when I floor it around 60 or 65 and it drops to the "passing gear" it dos'nt come out until 95. It really feels like theres alot left to top out but once again cuts out at 100. There is one thing that I dont enjoy that happens to most trucks I think. When I am driving in a perfect straight line and say hit some hardend spilled concrete or just big bumps the steering wheel shakes violently and jerks the whole front suspension off the ground and the vehicle flys into the next lane and when the tires land back on the road they grip violently and send the front end jumping back the other way almost seeming like it could grip and turn sideways and start to roll. Talk about an adreneline rush from total control to no control at all.The bottom line is this truck is awsome I'm not just very foolish. I'm sorry if I am glorifing my recklessness in this thread and hope I still can be allowed to participate in all the great things this site has to offer. Did I forget to mention that this is my first reply to a thread. Did it Show? Do I need to chill? Leave this site never to return. I guess I could have limited my reply to one or two paragraphs and saved face. Instead I made one giant run on sentence to get my point accross. It's all true. Great truck bad driver.
