Well, my 4.2 finally got bit!!!
The other morning I went to start my truck, it turned over about twice, then it just went clunk....and quit. It wouldn't even turn over. Mechanic sayed it is hydrolocked due to the leaky gaskets.
My truck has 139,000 miles on it, so I can't complain too much.
I do wished I would have went ahead and traded last week, I came within an inch of trading for a Dodge......oh well.

are you going to repair?
Mine did the same thing. Bent two rods. I got a price on repair and decided to go for it. $2400. That included replacing all hoses, belt, fuel filter, timing chain, water pump, valve job, resurfacing heads, two rods, all new bearings on crank. It runs like new. The mechanic said that the 4.2 is a great motor except for the faulty gaskets on the 97/98. I figure that $2400 is about 8 months payment on a new truck. So if I get another 2 years out of it, then it was worth it. What do ya'll think? Did I waste my $?

Howdy,
Mine throw the #1 rod out the side of the block. I was only turning about 5,800RPM's at the time. It had hydro locked at 100,000 miles and bent the rod. It finally blew at 135,000 miles.
If I had known about the leaky gaskets, I would have used stop leak, and this would have prevented the problem.

Stop leak is a band-aid fix. I noticed a head gasket leaking and the stop leak did stop the leak. About 1,000 miles later I popped another... The front seal by the timing chain.
At 155,000 I went for the long block replacement... $3500.
Is it worth it????? The answer is different for everyone.
For me it was.
The only bad part is that the A/C is not depressurized when they do the work. They bend the hoses when removing the compressor. With hoses that are 6 1/2 years old....... you guessed it. The A/C blew apart about 1 month later(another $1300)
