Help adding Horsepower to my truck

I have a 4.2 V6 1997 F-150 and I"m looking to add some power to it. I'm thinking about putting an air intake and exhaust. So what type of intake and exhaust would be good for my truck? By the way this is my first time posting here. Also does a Hypertech chip help a V6? Well thats it thanx.

I would probably go electric fans first as they would do as much as exshaust and intake combined plus you will probably gain 1-2 mpg. I got the Superchips 9100 programmer and it down loads good power to these V6's. You could also cut the end open on your intake and drop in a K&N filter, may only give half the hp increase of an intake but at 1/3 the cost. You might also consider just replacing your factory muffler with a Magnaflow instead of a catback. Others on this forum have stated they lost some lowend torque with 3" exshaust systems.

with the 9100 programmer, have you lost any mpg's? and what is the cost on that thing? what settings did you adjust the get the hp change? And would just replacing the muffler do the trick? I already have a k&n and noticed a top end rpm increase but no real mpg's or low end torque. my 6 is fine but a little more power never hurts.

The 9100 was a touch over 400, there is nothing to adjust just plug in, download, and unplug. And chose which of three programs you want. I got mine from Troyer Performance. Just finished a 440 mile trip to Greensboro and back , 21.56 mpg on the 93 octane performance tune. That's close to what I get local but we live in the sticks and probably 200 miles of the trip was 72-73 mph. This is on a 2000 supercab w/ auto and 3.55 gears. I ran it for maybe 100 hundred miles on the 87 octane tow haul tune and could tell there was better throttle response, the 93 octane performance program kicks butt. Don't buy it looking for fuel economy, but it gives excellent hp gains at all throttle positions. I am very pleased with the 9100, I have a Magnaflow muffler, S&B air filter with the modified stock intake, twin electric fans, ASP underdrive pulley, NGK iriduim plugs indexed to the heads with Accel 9000 truck wires. With the current price of gas I am debatting switching back to the 87 program, oh well I just filled up w/ Amoco 93 octane so I have 450 miles plus to decide.

I would get a Mac intake - some sort of exhaust - Asp pulley - Efans - Superchip and gears .

my setup's pretty good (nothing super awesome but it's fairly cheap) and i'm going with some 4.56 gears, i would recommend 4.10's though unless you're going with a much larger tire/wheel. check my sig for my setup
