Cool need more power HP

I own a totally stock 2001 ford f150 XL, 4.2L truck.Auto trans,a/c. I would love to add power to my stock truck, but don't have any idea on products such as chips and ect to add to it. I know if i add duel exhaust, a chip, and poss a air filter i could get some more power. any ideas would help tremendously.. espec if there cheaper fixes lol.. you all have a great day.. if ya all can tell me poss how much Hp i can get that would be great... thx again eric

Sorry, guy...but just trade it in for a V-8. It would cost you more to try to upgrade the V6 than the new truck would cost.

Damn v8 guys think they got so much power, whopie freaking do. I got a ton of stuff on my truck. New cam, RR's, MSD, intake, exhaust, headers, soon to have nitrous(just got to install it when it arrives), gears, locker, chip.
edit: anyone that says to just buy a v8 cause its cheaper, doesn't know the cost of upgrading a v6.

And how much did that power cost you and how much dyno-proven power did you gain? Numbers talk, BS walks....

It all boils down to what it costs to extract more power from the 4.2L V-6 vs. getting a a V-8 truck.

How about providing a price breakdown with the tested power gains for each mod so other V-6 owners can make an intelligent choice.

so modding a v6 to get an extra 30 horsepower is more expensive than buying a new truck. Don't think so buddy. that 30 hp is from my ford manual 4.2 205hp at 4440 and 5.4 235 @4250. Ok price list. UDP ASP $71 dollars shipped from summit good for 7 rwhp. Mac Intake claimed 12 hp increase 139 dollars plus shipping, say it gives 5 rwhp. then get heads 550, gains of ? 10 to 20. Get a cam 150 plus new springs 60, hp gain ?. Plus gaskets, they ran me 100. U easily have the horsepower of a v8, probably more for 1070. Now buying a new truck that is worth a thousand dollars, where ya gonna find that. If i had to do it all over again i would have started with the heads, cam, RR's then done all the nickel and dime stuff. The cam I got makes great power. Now all I need is heads and a supercharger and I'm set. And u got dyno number urself? I'll have some soon after I get my nitrous setup.
edit: whats the price of a new v8? I think I could buy every performance part that makes power including a sc for the price of a new v8. Hell with less that 10 grand I could buy everything. I don't BS.

Good job Gunslinger!!! Nice to see someone else from the v6 homesite shooting down the know it all v8 owners. He sure doesnt have much to say now. a 6 is cheaper on insurance. cheaper to buy including the upgrades to make v8 power. it doesnt take much to make an 8 faster but when you lose to a six youll feel like a tard.

plus with a v6 u can get a 5spd much easier...the 4.6l v8 is too hard to find with a 5spd and only has a few more hp.....

I will simply note that you provided the vendor's advertised power gains and did not back up any of those claims with a dyno slip.

Whatever cranks yer tractor....

When I bought my truck new, with various incentives available at the time, my V-6 was $1,400 less than an identically equipped 4.6 V8. That's a lot of $ for 15 hp and 20 lb. ft. of torque.

With a Superchip ($200), AirRaid ($200) and electric fan ($180), my truck runs at least as strong as my buddy's '97 4.6. With the extra $820 after those mods, I got Edelbrock shocks and most of my stereo.

The V8 runs a little better down low and has better resale, but I'm happy with my 4.2. It was a bit of a dog, stock, though.

projectSHO89,

I beg to differ with you on your opinion of v6 mods... I am not a braggart or anything, but I am not shy. I have done almost EVERYTHING you can do to the 4.2. I have every bolt on - intake, exhaust (custom designed and installed), pullies, ignition, headers, SCT tuner, etc....Lots of internal mods - 207/215 cam, RGR ported heads and intake, 1.8 HS RR's, hi lift V springs, etc... I just designed and installed a custom ATI p600b blower on my truck too. I know how much everything costs...People, prepare to be surpised...

5.4/4.6 bolt ons (intake, exhaust, pullies, chip) are the same price. But bolt ons dont really add a ton of power. Here is the difference....

Mod motor cams - $1000
4.2 cam - $145
ported mod motor heads - $1700
comparable 4.2 heads - $600-1200
Roller rockers for mod motor - $500
RR's for 4.2 - $200
ATI blower for 4.6/5/4 - $3700ish
my blower setup - $750

A proper setup on a 4.2 can easily yield 250 RWHP, and for cheap. Intake (150), exhaust (200), tune (250), pullies (175), Cam (145), heads (600), gasket and lube (250), and efans (200).

Less than 2000 dollars will yield you more power than a 5.4 with bolt ons (218 rwhp for my brother with an AF1, tuner, Gibson, 75mm BBk, and efans)... go to v6power.net....Plenty of guys have dyno sheets with great gains on thier 3.8/4.2

A 5.4 is like a 650 dollar option, and the auto is like 1500. See.... More power, less money. Plus all the incentives u get with v6 5spd F-150s

SC
