Clicking

My 1998 4.2L 5-spd is making a ticking/clicking sound. I have searched other threads but my problem is different from other problems I’ve read about. I first noticed it last summer when I turned the engine off. The sound is pretty loud, other people that I park next to ask me what is wrong with my truck. It seems to be coming from right under the engine. As the truck sits and cools the clicking goes away. I can now hear the tick even while the truck is running. Seems like it could be the exhaust is getting too hot. The engine is not running hot and there are no warning lights coming on. I just installed a Flowmaster 50 about a month ago. The ticking has stayed the same, no better or worse. Has anyone else noticed this happening and what could it be. If the exhaust is getting too hot how can I fix it... thanks

check your cats. They could be breaking down and clogging. Have you noticed a loss of power or less gas mileage?
