Unhappy Oil pressure guage and warning light

On cold days when I first start my truck that the oil pressure guage will register normal when I first start and the light will go out like normal but the guage will go to nothing and the warning light will come on. This lasts for a few seconds sometimes but comes back up and the light will go out. I'm not getting any lifter noise or any indication that I'm actually without oil pressure but I would like to make sure. I really would like to get this problem fixed. Does anyone have any ideas? thanks

First thing I would recommend is to change the oil and oil filter. Could be the filter clogging (long shot) but best bet is to start fresh with new oil and filter. Use 5W-20 or 5W-30 and the Motorcraft filter. Don’t use a crappy filter like Fram.

It could also be a bad oil pressure gauge with an intermittent problem. Changing the oil and filter first should help in the troubleshooting. You want to start with the cheap and easy things first.

This just happened to me this week. Always on cold start; normal then zero, normal then zero. Back and forth about 3 to 4 times. It turned out to be a bad sending unit. It scares the crap out of you though when you first see the red light and zero pressure.

Thumbs up

I put in the revised oil sending unit and I think it fixed the problem but we've had unusually warm weather for this time of year here in Kansas so I'll have to wait until it cools off again. Thanks for the help.
