I've been running one Perma-Cool 16" fan for over 4.5 years and 80,000 miles. No problems and it keeps things cool in 110+ F heat with the A/C on. I mounted it to the radiator and removed the shroud. I paid $90 for the fan, $20 for a thermostat switch, and a few more dollars for switches and wire.

Ahh...Just what I wanted to hear!

I wanted to go with perma-cool because of the CFM ratings and the price.

So you only mounted one fan? What size? Could two 16" fans be mounted straight to the radiator?

Thanks,

IMO, the shroud plays a critical role in how much air will actually get pulled through your radiator by the fan.

Is there some sort of standard procedure for testing the cfm on aftermarket fans? How can you tell how much cfm a shrouded fan will pull vs. an unshrouded fan?

The Flex A Lite 'Black Magic' fan I bought for $180 included a shroud, controller, fuse block, wiring and everything you need.

FWIW, last July the weather in my town was over 100 degrees every single day. My truck is heavy and makes more power than stock. I run the AC most the time and the truck has never even hinted at overheating.

I would be surprised if the Black Magic fan flows any less than the stocker. I've had this fan about 4 years and it seems very well suited to the V6.

Hazard269:
I just mounted one 16" fan about in the center of the radiator. I don't think two 16" fans would fit. My plan was that if the one 16" wasn't enough, I would mount an additional 14" fan.

dirt bike dave:
I asked Perma-Cool about the shroud and they said remove it. I told them that I thought a shroud improves the airflow through the radiator. They said on an engine-driven fan, the fan is so far from the radiator that it needs a shroud. A radiator-mounted fan doesn't need a shroud.

Does anybody have an idea of how much the stock fan/clutch from our 4.2's weigh? And also, can anybody tell me the diameter of the stock fan on the 4.2? Mark M

When mounting an electric fan between the engine and the radiator, would that be a puller or a pusher? Mark M

i bought the expensive dual fan setup and it was a straight bolt on. my truck never overheated and i have one of those lund cold fronts that restrict air from the grille area all my air comes in at the bumper hole. and i ran for 2 days with no fan what-so-ever because i took my fan clutch off but didnt have time to put the electrics on.
i can hear the cold airintake and exhaust now and the fans dont really add hp they free up hp from fan drag on the motor.
