K&N causing check engine light to come on.
K&N causing check engine light to come on.
Anyone have this problem? Seemed to have fixed it by replacing my filter with a paper one, cleaning the MAF sensor with electronic cleaner, and disconnecting the battery. I'm a little hesitant about putting my K&N back on. Ran the filter for a bout a year w/o any problems.
Hi rvlyssup,
MKTRUCK made some very good points in his response.
Disconnecting the battery cleared that code, not the paper air filter element. Without dong anything else, that would have gotten rid of the check engien light on the dash. That is, until you drove it enough to have oil accumulate on the MAF"s hot wire again.
The issue is usually seen when a K&N, S&B or whatever brand of cotten & oil filter has recently been cleaned, as most people over-oil them. That oil then migrates to the MAF's hot wire, and BINGO, you get symptoms, codes, etc. Sometimes you can have a little bit too much oil on those filters right from the manufacturer as well.
Don't give up on your K&N air filter, just clean it and then properly re-oil it, and you won't have any more problems. Remember, the color in the oil is the dye that is there to let you know where oil is present. It cannot be saturated, just lightly sprayed with the reoiling solution.
Good luck!
