Which mod is better?
Which mod is better?
I'm debating on JBA headers or possibly an electric fan setup for the next mod. Anybody running the JBA's on a 4.2? If I do the headers I'll probably do the ford chip as well, as I think I'll be beyond the superchip programming.
I'm also looking for a LS unit for the rear, but I'm indecisive there too.
Thanks,
Mitch

Well, if you go with the fans, you'll notice a bump in mileage. It won't be too much, but probably 1-2 mpg. Also, your engine will have faster warm-up time, will run quieter, and will rev up quicker. Plus, you won't have to worry about a chip reburn.
With the JBA's, you may possibly need a chip reburn, as you may be running lean due to them. I know when I put a set of shorty's on my 5.4L, I had a CEL on for a while due to a lean condition. I'd stick with the Superchip if you do go with the headers, though. Remember, all you would need is a reburn which is about 1/2 the cost of a new chip.
Let us know what you decide!

If there is really a milage benefit then the fans will come first. I'm driving about 700 miles a week for my new job, I pay the gas. Are we talking about the mark 8 setup, or something aftermarket? Anybody got links? Are we looking at $200 or way more?
I've previously had problems with electric fans on my Bronco. I had 2 16" permacools in a custom shroud. After about 2 years they didn't pull enough air to cool the truck. I put the mechanical back on and it works perfect.
The headers will come eventually, but I'm also looking at the limited slip. I've got a heck of a 1 wheel wonder. Regardless of headers or not, I've been thinking of having the chip reburned for a bit more performance.
Thanks,
Mitch

Well, I'm running the Flex-A-Lite 270 dual fan kit, and I've never had a problem with overheating, or the fans not coming on. I've drag raced, pulled 2 horses in a rather large trailer (8000 lbs total) for pretty long distances, and I regularly travel 250 miles from TN to KY. It's nice to have the extra ~15 hp and ~2 mpg that I got from the fans. Install took about an hour and a half, including the wiring that needed to be done.

Where might I find this Flex-A-Lite 270 kit you speak of, and how much does it cost? I'm really concerned with my milage and 1 to 2 mpg is enough of a savings to make this worthwhile. Heck that is over a $4 savings per tank of fuel, if it in fact will add 2 mpg. I put few miles on my truck but at 26 tanks of fuel a year that would be a $104 saving in the first year alone. Still need to get that $50 air filter if it will save 1/2 mpg that is about half covered in the first year.
With gas costing over $1.60 a gallon it is funny how much more I think of fuel economy. I've yet to see 14mpg since I got the truck and that stinks.
Thanks!

S_Gibson,
Definately invest in the whole intake, like the airaid, mac, etc. I had the K$N filter and switched to the full intake, noticable seat of the pants improvement.
Check the Summit catalogue for the fans. The 270 is $399. It's made for our trucks, but costs a bunch. I thought talley had been using a mark 8 fan setup that only cost like $180 or so.
With the superchip, gas is $2 a gallon. I got 20.45 mpg on a highway jaunt the other day, and usually average around 17 in town. If the electric fans will get the milage up around 22, sign me up. I'm always happy to gain more power too, as it's nice to smoke the occasional V8.
I'm lowering the truck with a full set of Lightning springs next week. I'm thinking it might help the mileage a hair. I'm expecting about 1" lower up front, and I'll swap the rear leaves in and change shackles in the rear until it sits level with my work stuff in the bed.
Damn new job has me at about 700 miles a week, I pay for the gas...I'm going to drive the girlfriend's 02 civic ex while she's out of town.
