Question Changing Starter

I was wondering about changing my starter on my 98 4.2 auto because it's not disengaging right and grinds for a second or two when starting up. A guy at the ford place said that for models up until 3-5 years ago, all you had to do was change the solenoid thingy on top which would be really cheap. But the newer models are supposedly integrated and you have to buy the whole unit for over 100 dollars. Does anyone have any info? Thanks

Thanks JnBmx! Do you know of a good place to get a starter that might be better or cheaper than the ford place?
