I NEED THIS UNIT!!! AHHHHH!!!! Well, at least they have a unit for both applications, now if we could only figure out who needs what. Is there any way to tell by simply removing the factory boot or looking up underneath the truck on the top side of the tranny? What are your guy's tranny numbers and necessary Hurst part?

From what I understand. The 97-98 M5OD-R2, F-150 tranny, was the same tranny internally as the 96 tranny used with the 5.0 V8. What Ford did was redesign the bell housing to fit the modular engine. The 4.6 has a different bell housing bolt pattern. The 4.2 tranny is not the same as the 4.6 as it also has the 5.0 bellhousing bolt pattern.
So in 97-98 there were two varriants of the M5OD-R2. The 4.6 the 4.2/5.0 So the Shifter for the 5.0 1996 F-150 should work with the 4.2 as they are the same tranny.
It might work with the 97-98 4.6 tranny as the only difference is the bellhousing. It gets better...
In 1999 Ford redesigned the M5OD and moved the shifter back 55mm. This was part of their "improved shift feel" mod. I am not certain but I think that they redesigned the lower shifter while they were at it. What Ford calls the lower shifter is what is in Wittom's picture. So now we have 4 possible lower shifters.

98-98 4.6, 97-98 4.2/5.0, 99+ 4.6 and 99+ 4.2/5.0

EDIT: So I will further go out on a limb; If you have a 97-98 you most likely need the 5025 and if you have the 99+ you the 5026. The only problem is the 99 MY as I do not know when Ford started using the new tranny. Was it tail end of 98 or beginning of 99? So you might have some 98 with the new tranny or some early 99s with the 98 tranny.

Give Troyer Perfomance a call. They will have at least one 5026 in stock shortly.

This is the only information I have seen about pricing. I have had really good experiances dealing with these folks, and have found that there pricing is very competetive.

Hurst said they needed another fit-up. I guess Anita has been on their case about this shifter and they had her find a test dummy. I got to be the test dummy. It seems they are trying to narrow down which trucks will need what shifter so that they get the right ones out to the right people. It seems to me that they've got it narrowed down pretty good and I would think that they will be out real soon.

the shifter is in!

I got the Hurst 392 5025 yesterday and installed it. It took me a lot more time to install that it took Crash!. I'll be posting pics and giving my take on the install real soon.

This shifter make a nice difference! You guys with the '97-'98 trucks have got to get this thing!

I'll give more info when I have more time.

Here are some pics and a bit of an explaination on the install that may or may not be of some help to some of you:

https://www.f150online.com/galleries...448-105403.jpg

Here is a pic of the factory shifter with the upper lever removed, and next to it is the inner boot. The toughest part of the install was dealing with the inner boot. There are four 8mm hex head screws that fasten it. Two of them are exposed forward of the shifter but two are under the carpet rear of the shifter. It was tough getting at the ones under the carpet. Hurst says in the instructions that "some" trucks will have two of the screws under the carpet. If yours does, it will be much easier to pull the carpet back as much as you can.

https://www.f150online.com/galleries...448-105404.jpg

Here is what you see when you have all of the factory shifter off. Make sure to put a shop rag in there when you remove the remnants of the old gasket.

https://www.f150online.com/galleries...448-105405.jpg

Here is the first part of the new shifter to be installed. It's shipped assembled so you have to take it apart then put it back together. It's actually pretty easy from here untill you get back to those two 8mm screws under the carpet.

https://www.f150online.com/galleries...448-105406.jpg

Here is the main part of the new shifter. I was supposed to take the shift lever off to do this part but I bent my allen wrench trying to remove the bolts.

https://www.f150online.com/galleries...448-105407.jpg

This pic shows the inner boot in place. It requires some cutting to make it fit. I didn't get a pic of how frusterated I was trying to work around the carpet. I eventually pulled it back enough to reposition the clip that had moved, that I couldn't see, that one of the screws goes into. I also didn't get a pic of the bone head move I did leaving a screwdriver under the carpet after I had put it back in place.

https://www.f150online.com/galleries...448-105408.jpg

What I'm showing you here is how close the factory boot comes to the plastic covering the heating/cooling componants. I was going to use the Hurst boot but it doesn't fit too well near that plastic piece.

https://www.f150online.com/galleries...448-105409.jpg

Here is the job complete.

I hope that someone else gets one of these soon. I would like to compare notes.
