Hi PQ,
You don't give any info about miles on your truck, but if I understand correctly you say around town you start from a stop? Applying gas it slips, then CLUNK! it's in gear? Doesn't do it all the time? Mostly in stop and go traffic?
When you had the trans flushed did they drop the pan, change the filter? Anything on the magnet in the pan?
If this is a low milage truck (under 30k, not likely on a 91) and the filter was not changed after the flush I would do that first. You might not be getting enough line pressure for the shift at low RPM's with a clogged filter. If this is a high milage truck, the filter should definately be changed(if it wasn't)first, and if you still have the problem it could be either 1) a bad shift selenoid(common and easily fixed) or 2) a bad roller clutch (rebuild).
Give us a little more info about your truck (miles) and maybe we can get more responses. If there is some metal in the pan don't let them clean it, if you need to shop around for a diagnosis, the other shop will need to see those bits of metal.

Hi PQ,
What is this "conditioner" that you speak of. I haven't heard of that before.
BTW were you towing when you get the clunk, I had an Explorer before I got a F150 that would slip and clunk in first gearwhen towinf my boat(about 2000 lbs.) but would be fine without the boat. Ford mechnanic and service manager(jerk) said the clutch pack(s) and roller clutch for low gear were going. Needed a rebuild. This at 67,000 miles. Ford crappy trans. Traded it for the F150. Best move I could have made.
If your towing I'm sure you know a tranny cooler is a must. Hope you get it straightened out.

HI,HOBBIT Thanks for the reply.Yes it has high mileage(86,000)When the tranny was flushed they did change the filter and used the pressure method that blew all the junk out, then they put conditioner in it with the new fluid.I had taken the truck to the trans. guy to hear and it wouldn't do it for him and thats my luck.We also have a 90 F150 and it has no problems. It just has no overdrive. We do alot of heavy hauling and I don't think this 91 has done much of that in it's life.I got the 90 brand new and just purchased this 91 last Sept. C ya
Hi Hobbit, The conditioner was put in after they did a power flush. Not sure what it is called.Want to thank you for your responce. The guy at the tranny place said it sounds like the shift selenoid. Thanks again !

Sounds good PQ, let us know how it turns out.
I love it when a plan comes together!

Hobbit, can you tell me about the shift selenoids, I have a 1991 F150 with the E4OD transmission. I am experiancing some trouble with poor shifting between 3rd and OD before rebuild, 4k on Trans since rebuild and now I am having long delay between 2nd to 3rd, double clunk shifting to reverse, and shifts to easy into OverDrive. I ordered a shift kit from Ford to resolve problem, kit not installed yet. Could it be that I have a bad shift selenoid? what is involved to change them? and should I forget the shift kit idea?

Hey maniac,
I am by no means an expert on transmissions or a mechanic. I have done extensive reading on these boards and try to help my fellow enthusiests(sp?) resovle, or at least, try to find an answer to their problem. I suggested the shift selenoids to Pallet Queen because I have read that these are a common problem in the F150. Your problem sounds much more extensive than Pallet Queen's. You also have a completely different transmission (E4OD), and you have already had a rebuild.
To my untrained mind it sounds as if you have either a bad rebuild or a bad valve body in that trans. I hope you got a warrenty with the rebuild. I would take it back to the shop that did the rebuild.
Sorry to give you the impression that I actually know what I'm talking about, I'll try to avoid that in the future.
Note to all: don't listen to Hobbit anymore.

Hi Hobbit, Well I took my truck to the tranny guy and he said it's not the shift seleniod. He thinks it's the throttle spring (behind the motor) or the spring case in the tranny. If it's the throttle spring cost will be 30$ and if it's the other 75$ so that's not to bad. At least it don't need no rebuild.Taken it in next week.Wanna see my truck go to:www.geocities.com/thepalletqueen it's a small picture but it works.I'll post again when the job is done to let ya no what's up. LATER!
