Lightbulb Sonnax shift valve

I originally found out about a sonnax Line Pressure Modulator Plunger Valve & Sleeve, 96948-01K on forddiesel.com. I releaized that this can also be used in gas applications and tried it on my F150Truck( V-8, 5.0 liter, 302 cu in), nice fast firm shifts and I can squeel the tires from a dead stop.
What a difference it made, and I thought I would pass the information on to nayone else who may be interested.

I bought mine directly from on-line from sonnax and was holding it in my hand 3 days later at: www.powerglide.com
for $20.01 plus freight.
The link to this product page with more info is

you could also check out the forddiesel link which I find is a very helpful site:

HI!... JOE80523 : Read my sig. I installed both SONNAX products in my valve body when I installed my BAUMANN ENGINEERING shift kit (on stage 5). They are very high quality peices and the FORD stock ones are know for wearing out by 40,000KMS.

Neal just the man I was looking for have you got any input on the B and M electronic shift improver because I am very interested in getting one, and I was also wondering if the shift kit you have is normal during everyday driving, and just gets mean under full throttle.

HI!... 97TRITON4.6 : I personally don't like the B&M SHIFTPLUS, but that's me. It creates more line preasure via a line preasure selenoid. If you run it on "RACE" for too long of a period, I have heard of some trucks frying the line selenoid. This is not good. I personally like to "PHYSICALLY" increase line preasure in the transmission with a "MECHANICAL" shift kit. It's a bit more work on your point, but worth it ten times over in the end. When I drive with my truck in drive, it shifts a bit firmer but remember I have my BAUMANN ENGINEERING shift kit on STAGE 5 and STAGE 6 is for all out dragracing. When I shift manually, it REALLY shifts hard and breaks the tires loose going into 2ND gear and sometimes 3RD gear. I am very happy with this kit, but if you decide ti install one, I'd advise you to run a external tranny cooler with electric fan. Shift kits when set at high levels cause a lot of heat to be generated. Hope this helps you out.

Thumbs up

Injun Bill,

The install is very easy. Basicly, drop the pan, remove the front portion of the valve body(it's about 4x10 inches), remove a clip, the valve, install the new one, the clip and put the valve body back on.... The Tricumulator springs go into the same valve body. Read the ford-diesel links.. good info on the subject.

Just found these install pics.. very good.

HI!... GAH : The reason the SONNAX valve only has one hole in it is to create more line preasure by holding up the fluid slightly. The FORD valve has many holes in it and does'nt allow the preasure to build up. I noticed the same thing when I was installing my shift kit and called BAUMANN ENGINEERING up to ask them. You should of installed it because the FORD stock valve is known for partially wearing out by 40,000KMS. By the way, how do you like the shift kit? What stage did you end up setting the kit at?

Hi Neal,
I like the Baumann kit a lot. I probably should have disconnected the battery when I installed it, because the shifts are getting better. I put this down to the "learning" strategy of the onboard computer.

I went with level 3, but probably should have followed your advice and gone with level 4. Anyway, in a month or so, I'll drop the pan, change to level 4, and install the Sonnax valve. You know, I wasn't sure about the Sonnax valve, it was a Sunday and I needed the truck for Monday, so I couldn't wait to call Baumann. I should have called you instead.

But I'm very happy with the kit. Thanks for all your help over the months.

When I ordered my Baumann shift kit I also ordered the Bypass Clutch Control Valve by Sonnax. However, as I was installing the kit, I noticed that the Ford part was identical (almost) to the Sonnax part. It was aluminum and had a number of orifices in it, compared to the Sonnax part that only had one orifice. For that reason I didn't change it.

V10 man, surely you have the 4R100 trans. On the 4R70W you have to remove the valve body completely.
