Nacho,

A 1998 w/5.4 will have an E4OD transmission!
Last year they made (called it) that.

In 1999, they changed the name of the E4OD to
4R100. Same tranny, different name. And they added an option of a power take off and some needed mods (which they do every year, actually they do all the time even in mid year.) But basically, same tranny.

The real reason for the name change is to get away from the history of the E4OD, by name.

Thats weird! I went to the ford dealer too buy a trans filter and gasket bacause I was going to install my sonnax valve and I told the guy that I wasnt sure what trans It had! (This was just to see what he would say) So he said do you know your vin# and I told him do you think Im a FREAK! If any of guys's and gal's know you VIN# by heart theres something WRONG WITH YOU! so he goes out there and takes a look at the trans and sais Oh you a 4r100.Then he said you lucky your truck was made realy late in 98

Question

Neal,
I sent a note to Greg at Baumann Eng. but havn't gotten a reply. Are you aware of which shift kit and sonnax valve are available for the 4R70W?. I see that there are several applications in their literature but dont know which is best for my 70W. I'm definately needing to firm the shifting charactoristicsup a bit. Kinda feels like I'm sitting on the couch rather than in the truck!. Thanks.. ..

Another great dealer story. I don't think I could tell if it was a 4R100 or an E4OD by looking at it from under a truck, except by the codes on the ID tag, and that's info you would know from the VIN or from just knowing what year it was.
The biggest difference between an E4OD and a 4R100 is in the Solenoid, and the visual difference in that is the color of the plastic plate, which is inside the pan. Early E4ODs had fewer variations of the planetary assemblies, I can't see that from underneath it either...., now one thing that is a dead giveaway, if it has no TSS sensor, it's an E4OD, but that's on top of the case, you'd have to wrap you arm around it to feel for that...

But, the important thing to look for is which pan gasket it has (4R100s only have the reusable, an E4OD goes both ways), the gaskets are matched to the pan, so if you have a reusable you can I guess use the cork gasket, you don't want to but it would work I guess, but if you have a cork one and you want to switch to reusable, you have to switch pans.

I don't know haw I rambled this long, the thing about the pan gasket is what I started out to say, Hope it helps,

G

It does have the reusable gasket and I have never changed the pan! And what the parts service guy was looking for was the code on the side of the trans.

NEAL, What exactly is contained in the baumann shift kit? I was wondering if they have that same kit for the 4r100 and then i would add the sonnax and tricumulator springs to it.

Question

Hey Factory_Tech... or anyone who knows.

I've a '97 F150 4.6L and have finishes two
mods so far (AirAid, and Gibson Sweptside
exhaust - both added nicely to a bit of power
and minimally better gas mileage).
I have in my hands the SuperChip from Mike.

My question is:
Which automatic is in the '97 F150 4.6L?

And, as I ordered the towing package and
heavy duty cooling, elec. so forth, DOES
this come with a 'trans cooler' (I think
I saw it did, but not sure?)

What effect would the Sonnax (if it is
made for my tranny) have in COMBINATION
with the SuperChip (alters shifting patterns
or so I understand)?

Finally (sorry for the numerous questions),
I am wondering if there is a "good" strong
aftermarket kit to switch from an open rear
end to a 'limited slip'?? Thought I saw a
couple of comments in this part of the
forum, but cannot find 'em now.

Thanks for the help!

The 4.6 only comes with the 4R70W, the 4R100/E4OD is for 5.4 and 6.8 only ( and some of the older engines, 5.0, 5.8 Etc...)

Really want a limited slip... believe the
dealer got me as i "DID" order it, and
find that it was not delivered with it. So
not really anything I can cry about, I
did not check it before taking delivery...
But have a 30 degree grade up to my house...
very step and want the better limited slip.

Thanks.
