Post Why is reverse gear so fast?

Anybody have a good technical reason why first gear is so fast on a 5 speed? Are they "re-using" first gear somehow. Man, it is ridiculously fast. Constantly having to slip the clutch while backing makes me feel like I'm trashing my clutch.

Thats why I went to the trouble of setting up a 2lo setup. If I'm backing up a steep hill, or a trailer or what ever, I just flip a switch and pull it back into low range, and voila problem solved

I have always seen Reverse geared between 1st and 2nd, as a ratio. M5OD ratios from a '97 manual:
1st 3.72 :1
2nd 2.20 :1
3rd 1.50 :1
4th 1.00 :1
5th book says 1:2.2, thats got to be a typo!

Reverse 3.40 :1 so its between 1st and 2nd as expected. If you have the 3.08 rear end, rather than 3.55, that will make it quicker.

Bob,

1st gear is usually the same as 1st on these trucks. If you find it fast try releasing the clutch and using the breaks. That is what I do.

Granpa,

From the shop manual; 1st = 3.9 2nd = 2.25 3rd = 1.49 4th = 1.0 5th = 0.8 Rev = 3.91
