trans not engaging

Hi have a 98 navigator with the 4r100 trans that has a problem engaging when cold if I put it in drive it takes awhile before engages if i put the selector in low or 1 it will take right off . After it warms up it shifts fine. Is there a sensor that could be bad . Fluid level is fine and trans has been serviced every 24000 miles.the truck has 77000 miles.

Hi gatormike,

My F150 was exhibiting the same symptom. It was taking a longer time than normal when engaging into gear, or atleast in drive. In the beginning it would engage into first and second. Until finally, it woudln't engage at all. Ended up having to rebuild the transmission. My tranny had about 58,000 on it when this started happening.

I had mine serviced every 30K and regularly maintained it. I did have a shift kit installed which increased line pressure causing it to happen faster. There would've been no way to avoid the inevitable, though. It just happened sooner than later.

Don't mean to scare you.

thanks for the reply f150intally I read the posts about your trans problems mine isn't doing all the things yours did. Just that first shift in the morning it's been doing this for about 30000 miles without getting any worse. I don't have any slipping at higher speeds or when in reverse. I've taking it back to the dealer and of course it won't do it for them. My x tended warr. is about up too. thanks......

Could be a sticky coolant bypass valve, which is cheap and easy to replace, abotu $30 and you don't have to open up the box, just disconnect the cooler lines. Also could be a bad TOT sensor, which is in the solenoid, runs about $200 for the solenoid, and pretty easy to swap, but you have to remove the oil pan.
Those are the easy ones, I'd try them first. Of course, if it's under warranty, replacing the tranny is easy, and pretty cheap, too.

Hope this helps,

G

OT question?

Factory_Tech,
What if it's A670 tranny with the same symptoms? I have 95 Caravan with 3 spd auto 2WD and when it's cold I have a delayed engaging to reverse…No problems when it's warm outside...
Do I need to check the same things as you've described or it's a completely different story?
Thanks,
Alex.
