If the shudder is the only problem try changing the fluid including draining the conveter. the shudder is the lock-up clutch inside the converter.I have solved many of these with a fluid change

Question One Dead torque Converter

I have 93 F150 with a 300 I6 engine and A0D trans. After 130K miles, the torque converter is almost dead, it shudders badly in 4th and some in 3rd. I plan on replacing this myself (I even have a trans-jack) but I was wondering, if I buy a new one, will it have the same problem, or has it been corrected in replacements? Could I switch to some sort of non-locking or maybe after market converter like TCI? Thanks for your help, this 150 is the best vehicle I have ever owned (never broke down and almost every thing still works).

I've heard the same thing, a tsb might address your problem, go to www.alldata.com, and see if there is one.A fluid, filter change may cure the problem. If you are intrested(heres the plug...... LOL)I have a AOD converter from my 93 stang, with 30,000 mile on it, make an offer, Also my cousin is an authorized dealer for Performance Automatic www.performanceautomatic.com. He owns P.M.R. Performance and will offer discounts to people from this board.if I can be of any help feel free to e-mail me.

Thumbs up

Mad_Mike:
Had same problem with my 96, runs the 4R70
trans. Dealer told me told me just after warranty expired that it needed convertor.
Went to local trans guru I know who went from Ford to Chrysler fluid. Worked fine.
Changed fluid later, going back to Mercon
again, still runs fine. Just make sure that convertors also drained, not just pan.
Worth shot before drop and swap starts.
