Question tranny grinding

My standard 5-speed tranny grinds sometime when shifting from 2nd to 3rd. I was wondering if any of you have this problem or have hear of it. Should I take it into the dealer? I've done tests and I am positive that the clutch is engaged all the way. It seams like it grinds pretty randomly but it still engages into 3rd. I have a stock 2000 4x2 sport, reg. cab, reg. bed, 4.2 v6, 5-speed. Thanks in advance for the help.

There's been alot said of the 5 speed on this board, good and bad. It is a notchy shifter and doesn't liked to be rushed. 2nd to 3rd is the worst because of the long push forward so it is not uncommon to get a grind. Make sure you get a positive shift before you lift the clutch. Synthetic ATF helps alot as does practice. I get atleast 200 shifts a day. I bet you also have a problem going down to first. Try a quick 2nd pull before pushing to 1st before popping the clutch. Rowing the gears through the numbers to get the one you want is your best bet. Hope that helped.

Yea, that's it exactly. I live in a hilly town with lot's of stop signs, I bet I get about the same # of shifts as you. Thanks! I'll take it a little easier.

I *just* got my truck back from being serviced on Wednesday this week. They replaced the syncros on 2,3, and 4th gear. Ironically, I've felt it grind 3 times in the 2 days I've gotten it back. Tomorrow I plan on putting Mobil 1 Sythetic ATF in my tranny. Hopefully this will smooth the shifting

Mine also randomly grinds from 2nd to 3rd gear upshifts only. It really seems to be a problem with the 3rd gear syncro. What I do to prevent the grinding when shifting into 3rd is to wait about a 1/2 second longer than normal in order to drop the revs a bit more, which keeps the gears from meshing.
Ever since this, I rarely if ever get that grinding feeling going into 3rd. Also, it seems to only happen when driving in moderate to lower rpms. Strangely enough, I can quick-shift into 3rd when I am drving in high rpms without it ever grinding.

My friend couldn't stand this problem with his F150, so the dealership replaced his whole tranny under warranty. And he hasn't had any problems since. I would rather bolt on a new tranny than have them replace individual syncros.

Gpage, that is *exactly* how mine feels, to the Tee!!! I'm taking mine to the dealer tomorrow and the tech that works on my truck will ride with me for a while and hopefully I can reproduce it. We will certainly find out what happens next. I'm so close to calling Ford and yelling it's not funny

They couldn't reproduce it, so the natural conclusion for them is that I'm "shifting too fast" which IMO is hogwash. So, my plans are to start looking for an aftermarket HD transmission so whenever my warranty expires, I'll put it in. So much for that. . . Hope the rest of you have better luck.

It isn't a unique problem. I've got the same characteristics. Dealer says it will wear in. More BS. I've got 10K and still no difference. Getting tired of the "first day on a 5spd?" jokes every time I hit 3rd.

Man, I thought I was the only one!! My transmission gets an occasional grind going into third only. You have to get the shifter into third just right or sometimes the quick grind will occur... Stephen

Well guys, I too have the same prob. My 99 4x4 5sp, ORP 4.6 had some serious synchro problem. Just before i hit 60k kms (the end of my warranty) i brought it to a local dlr. They kept it for about 28 days while waiting for the parts.

I don't even want to tell you my thoughts about that experience, but nonetheless, the truck was 'fixed' and i got it back.

They replaced the synchros for 2-3 and 3-4th, and they are working fine right now, wiht about 6k kms on the thing. but now, i'm nearly jammed getting into 1st and 1->2 is really picky.

The Dealer has a 12mth 20k km warrenty on the service done, so i'm going to have it in soon for them to do all the synchros. I'll keep everyone posted.

Mine does the same exact thing except it only does it after I have been on the highway for about 15~20 minutes.

Just driving around town it will not do it.

I also found that while pulling up to a stop sign that if I shift into 2nd then it will go into 1st easily.
