Post Maximum speed for 4x4 shift?

What is the maximum speed that you can shift a 99 F150 4x4 ORP into 4H?

I was doing almost 70MPH today and accidentally shifted into 4H. I was not accelerating. I had the radio on loud enough that I was not able to tell if there was any complaints from the transmission.

Do you think I hurt the big guy any?

Thanks.

I don't think it hurt but Ford recommends shifting into 4H at speeds not to exceed 45mph.

Cool

I've done it lots of times(highway speeds) in my 96 and it works fine even after 103,000 miles. My dad has a 90 F250 that he has done the same with and it has 95,000 miles. I don't think it will hurt anything. I have always been under the impression that as long as the rear wheels aren't spinning faster than the fronts, you can shift at any speed. I don't see anything in my owners manual suggesting slow speed shifts either, but I didn't look that hard.

As long as the front wheels and the rear wheels are going at the same speed (in 4x4 hi) it does not matter how fast you are going. If you try to shift into 4x4 hi at any speed while the rear wheels are spinning then that would cause problems. I had an '88 Ranger and it would shift into 4x4 hi at any speed, just for the heck of it I tried it at 85mph (as fast as it would go) and shifted smooth as silk. Another thing all four tires have to be the same size and same tread life left.

Raoul,

I believe your information is outdated now.
Maximum speed for a 4x4 shift = 105.5 mph.

approx 70kph max speed to shif in 4x4 on 97 and up trucks, any higher and u run the risk of grenading the magnetic clutch in the transfer case, spins up the front drive shaft before the lock up collar ( tcase ) locks, u can disengage at slightly higher speed, note used on both electic and manual shift tcases

Question

Just a thought . . . Engineer, I know that your shift was an accident so disregard this.

My owners manual (97) basically says you shouldn't shift into 4 high above 88kph (53mph). My next comment, if you are going that fast and need 4 high . . . I'd probably worry about slowing down before anything else !

Let me guess how you did this.... You went for the fan control, right?

Whose stupid idea was that, anyway?
