on my 89 when i pushed the lutch in i would hear a weird grinding noise (not too loud, but you can hear it with the radio off). turned out to be the throw-out bearing. how loud is the noise you're hearing?

You may very well have an issue there, but I think these transmissions can work, all be it like crap, for a good long time.

Let us know if you find something.

Question

The noise is only there when the truck is cold then it goes away as it warms up it sounds like a loose converter shield is only heard when the clutch pedal is depressed and the truck is cold.??
I have about 4000 miles left on the warrenty and i will need to act soon.

Exclamation Same problem w/ my 5speed

Buck,

Did you ever figure out what is happening? I have exactly the same problem. Once it's warm the noise is gone. It still seems to hook up well but I'm not sure what to do.

Please let me know if you have any further info would you?!

beaudarvil@excite.com

Thanks.

Beau

I am no transmission expert, but if you feel you have a problem and only 4,000 miles left on your warranty I would take it in to the dealer to have it looked at.

I may be wrong, but I believe if you at least have them look at it and they say it's nothing you still have it on record for taking it in. If later, after the warranty, you do end up with a problem it may still be covered since you had it looked at to begin with. Like I said I don't know for sure if that is true or not, but it won't hurt to take it in now.

loose metal?

buckdropper,
When I turn off the ignition my '91 (std cab/LB/4.9L/5spd/4wd) makes a noise like a loose heat shield as the RPMs fade.
I found that the exhaust system on the right side is very close to my transfer case. When jiggled by hand it taps on the case, wha-la... theres the noise.
Perhaps, Mr. Thermaldynamics has yours playing the same tune ... on a different beat?

!

I have not yet taken the truck in (hunting season). The noise persists but seems to have no effect on the way the truck drives. I will take it in as soon as deer season ends and i will let you all know what the dealer says. I already have 2 with the bow but here in NY we can get up to 5 this year!!.

Ask the dealer or your service folks about the slave cylinder. My 97 five speed has had this replaced 3 times and the problem continues to happen after time. I left the truck at the dealer for a few days and the dealer heard the problem and once they replaced the Slave it went away but only for a 2k miles. Ford claims it is normal but then again they claim the excessive rust, problems going into 4 wheel and all of the other things happening at 50k miles is normal too...

Good luck..

Hey Seems Ok?,
How did you know your slave was bad? My brother-inlaw has a 2000 f150, v-6, 5speed, 2wheel drive. He was sitting in the truck a couple of days ago while warming it up, he had it in first gear with the clutch pushed down. Something to do with the clutch failed and he ended up with his hood under a big work truck. He says now his clutch feels spongy. Any suggestions????

Buckdropper, did you ever get your rattle fixed? My used to do the same thing about a year ago. Someone here thought it might be the starter gear not fully retracting. Anyway, it dosen't do it much now and hasn't been a problem. I was just wondering if you positivly found the cause.

MY 97 has the same chatter. My 98 ranger had the same sound and I was told it was the heat shields on the cats. I have never bothered with on the 97 figuring it was the same thing. Guess I will talk with the dealer since it is in getting new syncro's again.

tommyq,

Sorry it has been a while since my last post. The dealer was the one who told me the slave was bad. They have had problems with them and continue to. The 1 and second engage we very rough and when ever you are move and take your foot off the gas there is a load clunk as the truck slows down. I have driven new truck and had an 89 bronco that never had this problem. The slave would be changed and it would go away for a few thousand miles then return. Now since it is out of warrenty the problem is just there. This has been an on going problem for them. I guess that is what you get for buying a new model year. I wouldn't touch the new 2003 f150 for a good 2 or 3 years to let them get the bugs out.
