Question Mercon for my 4R70W?

I have a code U on the door jamb which indicates I have the 4R70W, but I have Mercon stamped on my tranny dipstick. Most the postings I have read said that the 4R70W takes Mercon V.
What should I use?

My F-150 is a 1997 model, if that has any significance.

Mercon V became standard for the 4R70W in 1998 models.

The 1997 would have been filled with regular Mercon at the factory but if you went to a Ford dealership for a fluid change, they would certainly use Mercon V.

I don't personally believe it is necessary for you to use Mercon V in a '97 but it was developed to cure TCC shudder in the 4R70W and does seem to do so.

If you have regular Mercon in there now, you can use Mobile 1 synthetic, which meets Mercon but not Mercon V specs. I have MotorCraft Mercon V in my '97 4R70W and it works just fine.
