Question Speedo Gear Location????

Today or tomorrow I will be replacing the stock speedo gear. I want to go directly to the point. Where is it located, exactly?

Thank you in advance for your help.

Depending on your transmission. If you have the 4R70W (AODE) the speedo gear is located on the driver's side of the tranny, if you were looking at it, it's going to be close to the driveshaft. It should be a small black connector about 3-4 inches long sticking out of the side that connects to the wiring harness. It's held in place by one small bolt. Once you've taken it out, just use a small screwdriver to remove the retainer ring, slide off old speedo gear, put new gear on, put retainer back on, and that basically all there is to it. I don't know if this is the same with the E40D. Hope this helps.

Thank you very much. I have the E4OD, but I think if it is not in the same place you mentioned, it's going to be close.

If it's an E4OD it's on the extension housing, but I don't remeber what year it was, the 4R100 (E4OD) doesn't have a speedo gear after the 97 or 98 Model year, depending on the model, they went to a OSS (Output Shaft Sensor) and tone wheel, which is an electronic replacement for the speedo gear.

Yes, that change was after the 97 and 98 models. So, I hope everything is going to be OK and I will find the location for the new replacement.

There's no speedo gear in my '96 E40D. It uses a VSS in the diferential housing. Did they go back to a gear with the '97s?

Well, it's just a nomenclature thing, but we call the forward sensor the TSS Turbine Speed Sensor and the rear one the OSS, they're actually the same part unless you have a PTO option, and they switched over the course of several years depending on the model, I don't remember which year they switched each model, the vans still get a speedo gear on some models, I think all the 7 gears are DSO model vans. some of them have them on the transfer case, some are on the extrension housing, we don't install the transfer case, that's done at the assembly plant.

I bought my 17T gear yesterday for $9.00. It is the green one for the automatic transmission in the 98 model. It was located in the top side of the transmission tail inside of a black connector.
