Question Roaring from 0-15 mph

97 F150 V6
Symtoms occur after I drive about 20 miles on Hot Houston Freeways and then exit. I will be at the first traffic stop idling just fine but as soon as I hit the gas the trans?? or something?? ROARS from 0-15 mph. The noise makes me cringe and I feel like I'm horse wipping the truck. The trans fluid is OK and the RPMs are not off the chart. What gives?????
Matt

I don't know!! My '97, 5.4/E4OD does the same thing after stopping following a long pull with my 5th wheel. It scares the heck out of me. Someone posted that it may be the converter locking up. All I know is that it only happens after long pulls with trailer. Engine temp is fine (1/4) up the normal range, Mobil-1 in trans.

It's your fan clutch engaged because of the increased underhood temps. Your radiatior us doing it's job and taking the heat away from the motor, the fan us just doing it's job and taking the heat away from the radiator. As the air coming out of the radiator cools the clutch slows down and the noise will go away. Can also happen after extended idle time.

I have a 97 F150 Triton 4.6,V8, auto,110k and am having the same problem, w/the roaring. I have got some great advice on here and from a couple other on line sources. I had a few tell me that it is normal, but others telling me I have a worn fan clutch, which I am replaceing today. Also, some good advice I recieved in helping to isolate the problem is to: Turn heat selector to OFF, that eliminates the A/C clutch from cycling, if problem goes away with selector in OFF then it could be a dirty Air Control Valve. I hope we both get this problem solved soon ! Let me know, I appreciate all the info I can get. Also, I do live in Alabama, and the temp here has been 95-102 everyday for a couple weeks now. Might be a factor in my problem.

Question

I have the same sound from the fan clutch
once in awhile(only) at startup anywhere from the first few feet to the first 1/4 mile or so. It does not seem to be consistent with temp of the air or anything, as it happens only sometimes, in winter or summer. I read somewhere, I think, in the factory manual, that this can be normal on first start to get the clutch to correct temperature for free-wheeling.
Does anyone else experience this? (I have not had the hot fan engagement problem that
others have, though, since I've not had time
this summer to pull my trailer much and the
weather in the northeast has been cooler than
usual.)
Charlie.

I've noticed the same thing on a cold (relative term here in Texas) startup in the morning. Goes away after the first minute or so of driving.
