E4OD -vs- 4R70W -vs- 4R100
I would recommend that you go to the other thread (4R70W or 4R100 - What is the difference) and read. Then become confused... and wait for the rest of the 2001's to get here so you can go and LOOK. (AND then say what the heck like I did and buy the truck regardless of the trannie!) I can only relate what I have found regarding the 2001 SUPERCREW.
As I started to look at trucks over a year ago, I was concerned about the transmissions. It is my personal humble opinion that AUTO tranies are the weak link in American vehicles. I had hoped to get a manual 5 speed... but here in CA... unless you are getting a vehicle with a little 4 banger or 6... you MUST get an AUTO due to CARB crap. I had then hoped to get the heavier duty 4R100. Many of the well intentioned posts assured me that because I lived in CA... I would get the 4R100. To make a long story short... I was in the market for a new 2001 supercrew. However, I was told at dealers that the ONLY trans in that truck was the 4R70W. I personnaly inspected a BUNCH of trucks... in all different configurations - 4.6/5.4/Heavier GVW Option/4WD/Trailer Tow Package... etc. ALL had the 4R70W. So... I offer this tidbit of information not as an expert (by a long shot)... but just to share what I actually found out there in the 2001 Supercrews. Your experience and mileage may differ. TAX and license not included.

I'm about 99% sure that a 5.4 in CA gets the 4R100, there is a model made esspecially for F-150s with low emissions package, and I'm dead positive that the 5.4 w/4R70 is not carb approved.

Supposedly all CA-emissions 5.4L vehicles should get the 4R100. I think this has changed recently. I checked some 5.4L F-150 SuperCabs at 2 dealers in the San Jose area, and ones made very recently had a transmission code of "U", so they had the 4R70W. Dusty ones that had been sitting on the lot for a while had a trans code of "E", so they had a 4R100. All of the SuperCabs I checked were MY2000 vehicles, while the SuperCrews were MY2001 vehicles. All of the SuperCrews had the 4R70W. Looking under them proved that the code on the doorjam was right.
I got my "Dusty" 2000 "California" truck 5/5/00; It's build date is late November '99. It's got the 4R100. My buddies 2000 with a late December build date also has the 4R100.

Just out of idle curiosity, would a few of your, esspecially the CA guys post the model code off of your transmissions, I wanna check something, it should be a 2 digit code on the tag on the driver's side, just forward of the extension housing. One number, one letter, if it's a Lightning it will be 1S, for example, and would also have a model code YL3P-7000-CA but I don't need that, just the two digit...thanks. If you post all the info on the tag, I'll decode it for you..

2000F150Fun,
From what I've read @ F150online, the '70' in 4R70W stands for 700 ft-lbs of torque. By the same token, the '100' in 4R100 denotes 1000 ft-lbs of torque input. Hope this helps.

Without going into too many details, here is a recent experience:
Four trucks go off-roading. Three have 5.4 w/E4OD and one has a 4.6 w/4R70W. All take the same trails and play in the same mud hole. At the end of the day, NONE of the E4ODs would shift from 2nd to 3rd gear. The 4R70W shifts fine and continues to do so over 2000 miles later. New "4R100s" have been installed in the other trucks.
Any ideas or comments as to why?

Does anyone know the number for max torque the 4R70W can handle, at its input from the engine? In other words, 350 lbs of torque is what the 2000 5.4l is rated for output. Could the same transmission handle say 400-450 lbs torque or is the transmission near its torque handling capacity rating already? This spec will reveal a lot about longevity of this transmission. If it is only rated for say, max 375 lbs torque, it may be too light to be used in these trucks if you tow much. At least unless Ford under-rates the max torque of the transmission and it actually can handle more.
I have a 2000 F150 5.4l and plan to eventually do some engine mods down the road. Wondering how much additional torque the tranny with endure comfortably if I do the mods.
Thanks.
Dan.

Hi Factory_Tech,
I crawled under my truck to look for a tag. The only tag I noticed was a plastic card located toward the rear of the transmission. It had two large characters: 05. It did have a lot of other characters.
My truck is a 1997 F-150, produced in August of 1996.
Let me know the significance of this number.
Thanks,
Dirk

I'm a CA guy with the 4R100 and here are my numbers. Btw, I am experiencing down-shift problems. The tranny goes into "neutral" with the selector still in "D", then slams/jumps into gear upon acceleration from a stop.
Intermittant problem, and local tranny shop could not see any error codes.

Um, 3P is the model code, XL3P-7000-HB is the part Number, 124666 is the serial number,
BD is the Build Date, 9 would be 1999, E is May, and 24 is duh...24. 0599 is the engineering part code, and they repeat the serial number...
so there is enough to give everyone the code for their tranny ID tag.
On the post above, yes, the 70 in 4R70 is 700 lbs of torque rating, and teh convertor multiplies flywheel torque X 2, so if you do a lot of mods, well, the 5.4 is rated at 350 ft/lbs, so figure it out...you can do some upgrades on the transmission, or you can hope that what you do won't hurt it. I can't say much more actually, sorry.

Hi Factory_Tech,
Not sure if you still are interested in this information or not, but here it is:
Transmission code from a 1999 California Truck with 4R100 transmission.
3P XL-3P-HB
PRB-BD1
00007091
BD-8H27
Like I said, I am providing this only because you showed an interest in CA truck transmission ID's. It appears that the only difference between my code and the one before mine is serial number and date, however, I wasn't sure what information you wanted for your survey.
Thanks again for your help!

There is an easy way to tell what tranny you have,I've got a 99 F250 LD.I checked my 99 owners manual and looked up the transmission info.It tells you to change with a certain trans fluid which is marked on your trans dip stick, mercon and mercon v one is for the 4r100 and the other for the 4r70w they cannot be interchanged that is how I found out I had the 4r100 trans, also on your axle there is a tag mine was L115 which in the towing part of the manual tells me I have the 3.73 gears and am capable of towing 8300 lbs.I knew what gears I had but the info posted on the inside of the door might not be completely accurate as far as towing capabilities especially if you have optional gears. Its worth it to breeze through the manual every once in awhile to check things out.
