Question Transmission ID?

A proud new owner of a '98 Expedition with 4.6L with a couple of questions.

Can I determine the type of transmission I have from the VIN? (4R70W or E4OD)

Somewhat off-topic, can I determine whether this vehicle has the Limited Slip rear axle and it's ratio from the VIN?

If no to either or both, how can I tell what set up I have?

Look at the tag on the door jamb.
the trans codes are U44 = 4R70W, E44 = 4R100/E40D.

The axle codes beginning with "1" are open diff, those beginning with "H" are limited slip diff; the second character is a number indicating your axle ratio.

OK, here's the tag info from the door.

EXT PWT UA | RC72 |DSO |T0297
---------------------------------------------
WB BRK INT TR | TP/PS |R |AXLE |TR|SPR
119 4 1X 8 H9 U 15

Still can't tell from this which tranny I've got. Although it appears I do have a limited slip, can't figure out the ratio. Any ideas what I've got here? 3.73? 3.55? It is the 4.6L (so I was told) and I think it is the Romeo (sp) engine so I shouldn't have to worry about the piston slap problem. Some one on the board here mentioned that the 4.6 always has the 4R780W. Can anyone confirm this is the case in '98 expedition?

Thanks in advance for any help!

H9 = 3.55 Limited Slip (I think, but the 3.55 is right for sure)

U = 4R70W

The 4.6L has never been mated to the 4R100, or the E4OD before the 4R100 appeared.

If you have a 4.6L in an Expedition of any year you have a 4R70W transmission.
