Thumbs down Hard upshifts with E40D

Has anyone experienced very hard upshifts, especially 2nd to 3rd, under heavy accelleration? Its so hard that it feels like the back end of the truck bounces a few times (more like bucks you like a horse).

Under soft accelleration or when towing heavy loads the problem goes away.

I put in a SuperChip and it seems to amplify the problem, only under heavy accelleration. (Who doesn't want to accellerate hard when they get a Chip!)

I have 28k miles on it and is out of factory warranty by 6 weeks. I did buy a 7/100 warranty from Warranty Gold while it was still in factory warranty, so I was able to get their Diamond 'Bumper-to-Bumper' plan, so I'm not too worried about cost to get this fixed.

If anyone has any ideas as to the problem then please let me know. My local Ford shop likes to guess at things (I've been down three times for a clicking noise when turning, still no resolved).

Thanks.

Under WOT, your convertor is locked up in the first three gears, and it seems to me that this would make the shifts feel "hard" as opposed to when the convertor is not locked, and thre is a little slip in the convertor to soften the shifts. That's my opinion, I would have have the dealer flash the chip to check for any error codes, just to be sure.

When driving with the foot not so heavy (pretty hard with the Chip in it now), the converter does lock after 3rd gear. Is the converter supposed to be locked in all three gears when WOT?

I checked the tranny fluid last night and its at the right level.

Thanks for the input Factory_Tech. Whenever I'm looking through a thread and I see your name, I make sure I read your comments!

Your converter will lockup in any one of your first three gears. Depending how much throttle is applied and your speed. This is all controlled by your computer sending a signal to the transmission to apply pressure to the back of the converter for lockup clutch. This normally takes place at 45 mph or third gear. If you nail it hard it will lockup will occur in 1st or 2nd depending on throttle position and speed.

It seems that both you and I have the same problem with the tranny, if you want to call it that. Mine "hits" so hard in second, that the rear tires actually "bark" and I have no preformance mods other than a K&N filter. It is something I am worried about as well, and worried that I am going to go thru U-joints like mad once the warranty is up.
All of my buddies that have 99's are a little suprised at how mine shifts, and they want theirs to shift like that. Don't know why they would, other than to get that "bark" in second with an Auto. Theirs all shift very slowly, and mine shifts fast, and of course very hard.
Like the looks of kids in Cameros and Firebirds when I get second gear rubber in a 4x4 Offroad.....gets lots of looks and smiles!!!

I have a '92 F-150 XLT with towing package (E40D trans). The truck had 130,000 on it and was starting to slip. So I had it rebuilt by a qualified trans shop and after I got it back I noticed that it still had a harsh shift while getting onto the highway. It was explained to me that this was a characteristic of the trans when it is under a hard acceleration. Like getting onto a highway.
