man trans won't stay in 5th gear
I have an 89 F-150 with a 5 spd. manual tran. The transmission is hard to shift in 1st and 2nd, and will not stay in 5th gear - (I can hold it in 5th and it works ok, but instantly pops out if I let go). I would like to rebuild it, but I can't find parts or even a used tran. The transmission is a "ZF". Does anybody know were to find parts? My web searching turns up big trans. (12 speeds, etc.)

In my honest opinion the ZF is not all that it is cracked up to be.
I had mine rebuilt at 89K ($1100!!) after completly losing 3rd gear, it locked up and wouldnt do anything (Would not shift to any other gear)
After the rebuild it was fine for about 10 months and the grinding came back. Of course the repair warranty was expired.
I am just gonna swap in a C6 automatic with a shift kit and a B&M cable shifter.
If you absolutely want a manual I would opt for the T18 4spd for around $300 it has a granny low first and a 1:1 ratio in 4th, you will need .....I believe an 11inch clutch. ($250) This is a bulletproof trany and is very well suited for heavy work.
Good luck to ya, and keep us posted.
In the meantime you could just run around in 4th gear to get an idea if you would like just a 4spd, I hardly ever use my 5th gear.
