Probably Allison auto. Or keep the same one, just fix up the shifting.

The C6 is the best auto trans ever.We have four of them in our plow trucks with140k- 220k miles. The only thing i dont like about my 99 F350SD is the 4R100 its not half as good.A C6 can be made to handle 900HP with minor mods.

A six-speed with a lower OD for highway cruising. It would shift like this:

2 4 6 R
1 3 5

Weird? That way, I'd drop my revs at 75 from 2500 to around 1800 and my middle passenger (usually my youngest daughter) would have the same legroom she has now with the 5-speed.

Just whistling in the wind here...

Add-ons: Older Windstar driver's side wiper blade (with the air scoop, because I don't slow down when it rains), back-up beeper, "f150online.com" sticker and snazzy Tweetie Bird floor mats.

My third F-series: '73 F-100, '98 F-150 and '00 F-150. Great trucks!

The funny thing is that the E4OD and the 4R100 design is based on the old C6. The gear sets are interchangable! Ford sells a kit to install 1st and 2nd E4OD gears in a C6 because they have higher gear ratios. Something just got lost with the addition of that 4th gear.

None of the modern transmissions are as good as the ones designed in the late '60s and early '70s. GMs present 4L60 doesn't compare to a Turbo 350 and their 4L80 doesn't compare to a Turbo 400. Chryslers present automatic overdrive truck trans doesn't compare to an old 727 trans either. All of the Big 3 made some great transmissions in the past, but now with the pressure to reduce weight and cut costs, substitute plastic and alluminum for steel and iron.

Borg-Warner Super T-10 or a Doug Nash 5 speed (O/D version of the Super T-10).

I had a 77 t-bird with 351 and a FMX tranny. went 175k and still ran stong at the time I retired her. Never once changed the tranny fluid!!! Had a adjustable transmission module on it. That was the best shifting car I ever drove!! RIP

Since we're dreaming here, how about a 6 speed set up like this:
1st: 6.0:1
2nd: 3.5:1
3rd: 2.0:1
4th: 1.35:1
5th: 1.0:1
6th: 0.62:1

And configure the shift pattern:

R 2 4 6
1 3 5

You've got a "granny" gear for when you need it, like getting a trailer moving, located directly opposite reverse so you can rock the truck out of snow, sand or whatever. You've got a 2nd through 5th that have the pattern and ratios of a normal 1 thru 4 and for all normal driving you'd start in 2nd. 6th is a huge overdrive allowing 4.11 gears and still have decent revs at highway speeds.

Design it to handle 400+ ft-lbs and they wouldn't be able to build them fast enough.
Instead we get the Mazda POS OD.

Would a Chrysler A-727 from the late 60s or a vintage Turbo 400 be a fair answer? C-6s were good, but they weren't as tough as the comparable trannies from GM or Chrysler of the era.
The old (big) Chrysler automatic of the mid to late 60s is the finest 3 speed automatic ever built. Shifted like silk, yet lasted for a lifetime.
It's just kind of sickening that the Big 3 know how to build a lifetime tranny; they just won't because it would probably cost a hundred bucks more per unit!
Right now, according to those "in the know," Chrysler is actually the worst. Ford close second.
