4R70W Shift kit
Does anyone know of a performance shift kit that is available for the 4R70W transmission?
I'm not looking for an RV/Towing shift improver, I want a firm shifting street/strip shift kit.

HI!... BOB P. Go with a BAUMANN ENGINEERING shift kit. It's called a RECAL-PRO 4R70-W VALVE BODY RECALIBRATION KIT. It includes all the harware to get firmer shifts for 1-2, 2-3 and also for overdrive calibration. $99.95(U.S). They also sell aftermarket PREASURE REGULATOR VALVES $15.00(U.S) and BYPASS CLUTCH CONTROL VALVES $25.00(U.S) for the 4R70-W. I have used the TransGo Shift Kit for about 11-12,000 miles and the transmission is still going strong. The kit comes with paper instructions and a video.
I also spent over an hour just reading on the Baumann Engineering web pages and these guys seem to know transmissions better than anyone I have seen. Go either way and you should be happy.

Neal I emailed Baumann Engineering and requested a catalogue and price sheet for all of their 4R70W items, I'll see what they send me. I'm also discussing with Mike T. the possibility of having my chip reprogramed for firmer shifts. If you could fill me in alittle more on the details of you chip program, and how it works for you in real world driving conditions that information would be helpful. Also if you already are getting really firm shifts with your chip program, why are you considering a shift kit? Thanks.

HI!... BOB P. : I got the firmer shifts through a custom programm from SUPERCHIPS. I was hitting my rev limiter real hard on my 1st to 2nd upshift because I installed 4.10 gears. The 4.10's were causing the revs to come up so fast in 1st gear that the tranny did'nt have a chance to shift before it hit the revlimiter. I was sending it in for the rev limiter problem so I figured what the hell. It does shift a lot harder than stock but me being a drag racer I like extremely hard shifts so that is why I am going with a aftermarket shift kit in conjunction with the custom programmed chip. Just ask MIKE T. about his LINCOLN. I think he is running a custom chip and a TRANSGO shift kit together and under full throttle he chirps the tires going into 3RD gear at 92mph!

Flats Man, as it stands now I beleive their has just been discussion of installing the Baumann kit at a future date. I know that I've currently gone the custom program route on my Superchip,to clean up the shifts. I'm not sure if I'll even bother with a shift kit now. But Neal on the other hand seems likely to be the first Baumann kit test case. Maybe someone else will beat him to the punch. Good luck.

Don't use the B&M shiftplus electronic unit. More guys have toasted theirs trannies with these. There is a document coming out by a Ford employee that tells you how to modify the 4R70W for the shift and feel you want. He has made trannies that handle up to 600 hp without too much exotic parts. www.tccoa.com has a BBS that is pretty active with this stuff.
Be careful with the shift kit and chip combo.
There have been reports that the higher line pressure that the two combined can make can crack the valve body and other bad things.
Many guys are having the chip transmission firmness taken out and going with the shift kit to improve performance, the chip still runs shift points and all.
