Does Anyone Make A Performance AOD Trans?
Ok it looks and feels like it won't be long before my transmission in my truck goes out.
1993 F-150 2WD
302, AOD (3-Speed 1,D,OD)
It has already been rebuilt twice and it only has 48k miles so basically I believe it's a Lemon. But anwyays I don't want to fool with it anymore. I want to move up to a good performance trans. I was looking at the JET Transmission on www.jetchip.com and they look awesome. But their AODs are all 4-speed. Mine is a 3-speed
so does anyone know of where I could get a good performance type 3-speed AOD. I don't want no racing trans just somthing that will shift a little firmer and stand a little more HP than the stock one. I figure I might as well just improve upon my truck instead of sticking the same junk trans back in.
Thanks for all help!

BMW325: Have you ever thought about an aftermarket shift kit? THey DO work, and make sure you have a tranny cooler. HEAT is a trannies worst enemy. I have the factory tranny in my 89, and I changed the fluid last summer from the factory fluid. IT had lost all of its viscosity, but the tranny was in good condition. I hope this helps some
Wow Pastmaster you must spend a lot of time on here! Heh your advice is very helpful.
Thanks!
Ok where can I find a good shift kit? Maybe I could get the shift kit installed and ahve my trans rebuilt once again
Also when you changed the fluid did it make the trans shift smoother and quiter?
Thanks!

Well, I guess one could technically call it a 4 speed since it's a 3-speed plus OD. Regardless, when mine finally fails, I'm getting the rebuild kit from these guys: http://www.baumannengineering.com/aodcat.htm
From what I hear, they are pretty good. Neal (the HP freak) is running some of their parts in one of his trucks.
Along with that shift-kit, be sure to get a big ol' fat tranny cooler if you don't already have one. The OEM "towing pkg" cooler is about as small as they make.

Heh I don't see how it could be a 4-speed though unless they are counting Reverse.
But yea I think I have the trans cooler. It's the small cooler mounted onto the radiator thats about 1/5 th the size of the radiator right ?

Yep, spending too much time hea. I think your right about your cooler. It should be on the left side the radiator. They are pretty dinkey on the facts. It is alot better then not haveing a cooler at all. They make them for the size that you need, bigger if you pull a bigger load and so on. I think the AOD is considered a 4-speed, and I think the 93's were electronic too. The AOD is a better tranny than the E4od is. Ford major problems with the E40d. As far as the aftermarket tranny kits: B&M makes the best. You have to have experience when installing those. I don't have one myself, but I know that they are a good product.
Actually, there are 4 forward gears in the AOD. Leaving off the option to manually choose 2nd gear was someone's "better idea".
I don't know about the AOD to AODE switch-over. Nothing on my truck identifies as being "electronic"- sticker shows I got a "discount" because of the AOD transmission.

The AOD in '93 was not electronic. That changeover was in '95.

There was an article several months ago in Hot Rod about improving the AOD. One thing mentioned, besides the shift kit, was a different valve body to improve the shift pattern. I don't recall the company that manufactured this, but the article had a lot of good info for the AOD.

BMW325 are you sure it is not a E4OD, That what I had in my 93 Lightning.
But if not maybee you could get a Heavy Duty E4OD from a 93-95 Lightning.
It was the best transmision I have ever driven, shifted firm and crisp every time, even with 130,000 miles.

Nope it's just the normal AOD. Thats a good idea on the E40D though. But are they computer controlled or just normal because if they are computer controlled I would say i would have a rough time getting one to work because I would have to Mix/Match computer stuff but I don't know for sure how that stuff works. Anyone know ?
Yes, 4wheel parts wholesalers sells a JET e4od for 2689.95 and the TC for 399.95. You probably need to call them to get specifics on it, but it is supposed to be extensively modified. 1-800-421-1050

The guru for the non-electric AOD is Art Carr. His web site is http://www.artcarr.com/. Also check out Precision Industries at http://www.converter.com/ their 2 pc input shaft may be more to your liking than Carr's 1pc. unit.
