Question Posi or limited?

I have heard that there is a transmission fluid that can change a limited slip differential into a positive traction. Is this true? If so, I would also like to know where I could get such a product. Thanks.

How in the @#%5 the heck do you make a "limited-slip" into a true locker? They are too different setups.

Well, I know that they are two totally different set ups, but maybe my buddy meant that it just acted like a posi trac, I am not sure what he meant. All he told me was that he put this new transmission fluid in and it did what a posi trac does, spin both tires. A limited slip will only spin one, am I wrong on this, if so please tell me.

"Limited Slip" is what Ford calls their differential with clutches that helps apply torque to both rear wheels. A "Posi-Track" is what I believe GM refers to a similar unit. The trans fluid may make the clutches grab more but it aint going to make it a "posi" or a "locker". A limited slip and posi are equivilant units in my book. A "Detroit Locker" uses a completly different method to transfer power to both rear wheels, and you will never get a clutch type to work as well.

I was checking out the Jan. issue of 4 Wheel & Offroad magazine, when I came across an advertisement for a NEW Detroit "Gearless Locker". I wonder if this might be what he's talking about. It requires a "special" fluid.

detroit GEARLESS LOCKER
No internal gear teeth. Fully automatic action. Eliminates individual wheel spin-out for better traction. Durable and reliable. Front axle compatible. Simple installation with video included. Noise is almost non-existant. Uses special Detroit Silencer Fluid (included)! 100% Locking Delivery! Simple and quick installation! Includes new Tunkenel-V Power Driver Cross Pin!

You could fill your rear differential with J-B Weld or Belzona and it would lock then. You probably wouldn't be able to drive it, though.

Cool

Your buddy might be referring to "Hypoid gear additive", It is a friction modifier and will help keep your clutches from chattering.

Wink

The limited slip will not let one wheel spin, it allows about 1/8 to 1/4 turn of the wheel before the clutches engage and both wheels pull. Alot of people get this confused. When one wheel pulls, one alternating with the other, (whichever doesn't have traction), is called an OPEN differential- not LIMITED SLIP!!! limited slip is just that, it limits the slippage.

Question

Alright, what is it called when I powerbrake, and one wheel spins? What is it called when both wheels spin while powerbraking?

I would check to see if clear taillights are legal in WV before getting a set. In some states even the slear side marker will get you a ticket. 1 wheel spins open rear end, 2 wheels spin limited slip rear end. If sometimes 1 spins and other times 2 spins have some check rearend before it lets go.

Pastmaster:

You're correct. I didn't see the article until after I posted about the advertisement.

According to the author, it works as good as any other locker design.
