Question Transmission Fluid

I have a 1997 Ford F150 with the 4.6L engine, 4 wheel drive, and the 4R70W automatic transmission. My owners guide recommends mercon automatic transmission fluid. The Haynes repair manual states to use Mercon V. Which is correct and what is the difference?

Hi Tom S!
I am still not sure what the difference between the two is, but see my post "Difference between Mercon/Dextron III and Mercon V" under this heading. I belive that only late 98 and up have Mercon V and that your truck (97) still uses Mercon/DextronIII.

Your transmission refill stick handle should be labeled with what to use. Trust your original owner's manual.

Mercon IV is synthetic while Mercon III is not. Don't mix them for your transmission.

The top of your tranny dip stick cap should tell you what brand to use.
