Post can I put in a different transmission

Is there any other manual transmission that I can swap in, I want to add more power to my 4.6 but don't want to kill my current trannsmission. Got a list of mods to do, most improvemnet is a set a aluminum or iron heads with better flow (any suggestions?) Or could the current tranny handle power increase from aftermarket heads. I gave up on the S/C though. Or is their any talk of centerforce or anyone else making better clutches?

Sorry for all the questions but I just got my truck and I'm to excited.

I don't know how strong the stock 5 speed is, but there are a couple of options. You could install a 5 speed from a Super Duty 5.4 engine which is strong but not a fast shifter. Or you could install a 5 speed from a Mustang GT. Either one would be a MAJOR project because even tho they will both bolt right up to your engine, getting the clutch linkage to work and possible shifter location changes figured out would be a real challenge. Personally, I think they should put the Mustang trans in at the factory instead of the Mazda trans.

I don't think the mustang transmission would be compatible with the 4x4 transfer case wtihout a lot of work. The SD tranny would be the logical choice, but even so it may require a lot of work also,as far as transfer case, crossmember, etc.

Sorry, I missed the 4x4 part of your post.
With 4 wheel drive, all bets are off. Probably neither trans will work because I'm sure the transfer case is different on the Super Duty.

It's no problem, guess I gotta wait to find a better clutch to hold more torque.

Hey, I'm in the same position. My low HP 4.6 is aready making my trany squeal on exceleration. I changed the trany oil(and all others oils) to Amsoil and the noise was cut out 90%. I originally wanted the 5.4, but Ford does not make it with a stick (5sp). So had to get the 4.6.... That right there tell you Ford knows the trany can't take higher power! I am trying to find out if the transfer case will fit the HD-trany. But - my clutch is also weak. It is on the verge of slipping. Thinking of going to the Mustangs SVT clutch. So much to do, but man, IT & I NEED IT.

Something to consider- On the Stangnet, guys are posting the Mustang still has the cable and quadrant. My 4.6 5-sp is hydraulic. As I remember, the '93
T-5 had a hydraulic clutch. Maybe that's what you are looking for.

I am in the same boat, but I will make no tranny changes until ESP expires.

As far as the shifter goes, if it doesn't fit, you can always elongate the hole, and build a new boot console.

Shouldn't a high performance clutch from a 4.6 mustang work?
