Transmission shudder!!

Transmission shudder!!
I have a 1993 F150 xlt,4x4,5.8L,E4OD and have been experiencing a slight shudder when starting in 1st gear and towing a travel trailer. No shudder when not towing! Any comments?

I had this same problem with my 92' Explorer 5 spd. The clutches that Ford uses in there vehicles are not great for towing. If you check the towing ratings for Ford manual trannys, they are about half of the automatics.

While this site is terrific and has a lot of good info & people, it's primary focus is '97 and later trucks. You might find a few more opinions on the 80-96 mailing list at www.ford-trucks.com.
According to some of the guys there, the E4OD has/had a few problems. Since I don't have one, I never really paid that much attention to the posts, but there have been a lot of recommendations for improving the reliability of that tranny.

Do you have a limited slip differential? I had the same problem and it turned out to be the clutches in the rear end. Just get some friction modifier (if you have the LS rear end) from the ford dealer and drain some oil out of the rear end and add the friction modifier.

Check your tranny fluid. You may need to flush the tranny. If the problem goes away, don't worry about it until it returns. If the flush doesn't fix it, get a tranny expert to take a look at it right away.
