4R70W Self-Destructs in Passing Gear - 3rd & 4th Gone in a blink!
My wife's Explorer dropped a tranny at 65K. The dealer negotiated a deal to replace it with a re-man unit from Ford. All they charged me was the labor, $500. They even extended the warranty on the ENTIRE drivetrain. That transmission is now 75K and still going strong. Tell them that the Chevy's are starting to look pretty good and they will come around.
Sounds all too familiar!
Mine was a one-way clutch (I have pix -- but don't know how to post them) that showed up with a snapped inner race (if race is the proper term) -- and resulted in a $3200 bill at N/C for a remanufactured transmission.
Note: Ford recommends the replacement of the Air-to-Oil cooler (cannot properly back-flush it) -- and recommends the installation of an in-line filter in the coolant line -- both to prevent recurrance of failure due to fluid contamination (reference TSB 00-23-10 dated 11-13-2000).
BTW, 150 miles in 2nd gear at 55 MPH netted 12.6 MPG on my way to the dealer.

Y2K 770, Does your 4R70W have the deep pan on it? I have a 4R70W Race built by Art Carr that cost me under $3000 with a 2400 stall torque converter! I am looking for the year trucks with the 4R70W tranny that has this deep pan and pickup. A part number would be great!
Followup: Drove the truck from the dealership and traded it in on a Passat (9/11/2002 - the one-year anniversary). Still driving (and loving) the Passat, and still missing the truck.
