Slipping Tranny-Help!!

I just had the tranny filter changed and fluid flushed at the dealer and noticed a couple of things.

1) Whinning sound from transmission when in drive.(I don't remember the tranny being so loud).

2) 1st to 2nd gear slips, occasionally(seems to hang--with high RPMS's and no power). Usually when tranny is warm and driving in stop-and-go traffic.

3) Fluid level is a little high(on the "do not add" portion of the dipstick.

What could be the problem??? Did they use Mercon V instead of using Mercon????? Should I drain some fluid??? Or is there another problem??

Please advise me!!

I wouldn't drain any, too full is better than not enough. When was the last time the fluid was changed? How many miles between changes? If you have high miles and it's never been changed before you might be suffering from the "transmission dying a slow death syndrome" because the fluid was never maintained." I don't know why, but it seems that it is common for trannys to slip/fail after they get a new fluid change if they previusly went way over the recommended change interval. Ask them what fliud they used, if its not stated on your invoice. Also, i see you are from my area...what dealer did you go to?

Could be a few things I could think of.
1)They used the wrong trany filter. Many of the dealerships try to give me a 4X4 filter when I asked for one. The difference is you might have a heavy duty trany which requires the filter to have a port on the bottom(used to suck up more trans fluid and maintain a constant pressure) With out it the pressure is lost and trans will slip.

2)If it makes a hipitch noise at higher RPMS (as would a supercharger louder and higher the higher the rev) That could be a gasket. Although your transmission has a reuseable gasket sometimes they use a new one that does not seel as well or the reusable is not placed in the groove right.

I would not drain any fluid either. I would take a look under the truck and see if anything looks wet and then go complain. Your transmission is one thing you do not want to be messing up on you not only is it expensive but it is a pain to fix!
But dont freak out because I know a few people that have fords and their trany does have a little wind to it.
Good luck hope some of that helps. SAFE SPEEDIN

Thanks for the replies.

I have 70000 miles. Last change was done at around 30000. I am going to poke around and see what I can see before I need to bring it in.

Since ford went to this "quick lane" thing, it almost seems like they went to a "jiffy lube" set-up. I don't like it when a bunch of kids are working on my truck!!! By the way, service was done at Minar Ford, truck purchased at Tousley.

Simple mistakes happen even at the dealer, unfortunately. My guess is either they used the wrong filter or more likely did not get the new one seated properly. Maybe did not remove the old filter neck sealing ring. This would cause it to suck air.

like Tiger says...filter fell down into the pan...it's sucking air at higher rpm.

I'm having the same problem. 2000 F15 4X4 - - just had the tranny flushed last weekend and I'm noticing no power late in 1st and a slow, sloppy shift to 2nd. Almost like it's stalling. Only have 40,000 miles on this thing, but I'm heading to the local Ford dealership to have them pull the maintenance records, as I bought this used.
And ya know....when I'm thinking about it, I don't recall seeing them drop the pan..................well I'll be go to...........

if you drop the pan...

and everything checks out, consider this....did they do a complete flush or a pan drop?...if it,s just the drop then try draining the tourge convertor and refill.. if they did a full flush, then try some seafoam trans med...great stuff...i used it when i started having some shuddering and gear slide between shifts and it freed up the valves and stopped all of it...shifts quickly and smoother between shifts now....got it at napa

'Wonder if they flushed it backward -- and blew off the filter as suggested by one of the earlier posts (Q: can that happen?).

No, I don't think it can happen.

In order for the pressure to flow backwards through the transmission the transmission pump needs to turn backwards. If it isn't turning backwards it will block all the flow.

Since the pump is bolted to the engine, the engine needs to be turning backwards for them to flush the transmission backwards. It isn't going to happen.

The E40D does not have a listed interval on fluid replacement. I don't think with your 30K and 40K intervals you have damanged the transmission. I would agree that the dealer needs to fix whatever the did during the change.

Well........back and forth to Tucson yesterday.......so I know everything was hotter than an ex-wife hearing you're doing good without her........got back to Phoenix and was driving out to one of the Saturday night local car shows at Hooters and things felt like they should. None of the sloppy shifting.......at least I didn't notice any. I'm hoping and thinking that the Seafoam treatment did what you said it would. I'll see how things go over the next couple of days, as I've got some running around town to do........and with all the blue-hairs down here now, there's alot of quick stops and starts.
