How many miles? What year, engine, configuration?

I am not qualified to answer your questions. I think the owners manual says to replace manual transmission fluid at 60k.

There may be something else going on. I think more info might enable people to be more helpful.

Check for leaks in the hydraulic system. Is the oil level in the clutch resevoir low? Air in the system will cause this. How is it going into reverse? A worn clutch will not exhibit this symptom. On level surface rev truck to 1500 rpm and press the clutch in and shift repeatedly from 1st to reverse. It should not grind.

In most of the manuals I have driven, I have never had to do anything with the fluids of anything. Knowing Ford, they expect you to change the clutch fluid every thirty thousand miles or something.

It is rare I hear of problems with a manual transmission. You may need to get more than your clutch operated on.

You need a slave cylinder, they are bad about that. Its a internal fluid leak. The way to tell for sure, is to pump the clutch like 3 or 4 times and then if it goes into gear ok , thats what it is.

It is best to fix a problem like this one immediately. I am not sure how much it costs. But hey, it is a part of a manual transmission, so it should be cheap for you.

What? Manual transmission parts are WAY more expensive than automatic parts. I price them out for customers every day. One countershaft for a F150 manual can cost over $900.

But anyway, you are looking at about $150 for a slave cyl. and about $300-$400 labor.

Sorry. I have just never had any problems with a manual. All I ever did was change the oil, and keep my air filter cleaned, and changed.

Naw, if you do need a clutch, the labor wouldnt be any more to put in the slave cyl.

The manual says 60K. I just changed my fluid at just over 30K. It made a nice improvement. I used a synthetic. I think that I will change the fluid every 10K from now on.

Curious here you say you price out this stuff..
I am curious if my local dealer is screwing around. I asked how much for a clutch job and got quoted 700, then 850 now it is 750 labor... I think that is just crazy. The truck is for a 97 f150 4x4 with 4.6. Just seems high to me.. Or am i crazy :S
