5 speed Q's
Changing the clutch on a 4x4 involves removing the torsion bars, the exhaust system the t-case and finally the tranny. it is a real PITA.

Wow, was unaware of all that had to come off on the 4x4 (hope I don't have any problems). I think the slave cylinder will also describe your 1st gear problem, the clutch isn't disengaged all the way due to poor hydraulics going against the one-piece throw-out bearing. If you did like Jeff said and pumped 3 or 4 times, it should go into 1st easily after that.
As far as you having driven around 4k like this, indeed it is like any other hydraulic leak. You could drive around with a leaking brake system too. Ultimately, though, leaks get bigger, and pumping a couple times won't work anymore, and you won't be able to drive at all. I'd suggest biting the bullet and getting it taken car of ASAP.
Weird, cause I was just thinking about how I kind of liked the hydraulic system, due to not having to adjust the clutch repeatedly (of course they had self-adjusting mechanical ones too). You wouldn't have this problem if the linkage was mechanical.......Of course you also wouldn't have this problem with an externally mounted slave cylinder....Leave it to some genius to put some POS slave INSIDE the tranny...

The exhaust and the transfer case dont really bother me all that much it is the torsion bars i have looked at it now 3 times and i just cant get a convential puller to work on there is there a trick or something?

There is a torsion bar adjusting bolt as well as a tool to let you remove the adjuster bolt and nut....I had purchased one years ago when I first bought my Ford and thought I was going to be doing all this stuff myself...Then I re-entered the real world, and now just take it to the dealer for stuff like that...

I bought my slave cylinder from auto zone for 62$ and had it put in and a few other things done for 335.00..I drove mine untill I could not use the clutch anymore...It was not fun and proably not to good but I didn't have the money to replace it...

When they were quoting you the different prices did they offer a free jar of vasoline with the price?
or do you have to pay for that too?
I love my truck, but some of these dealerships seem to think its ok to rape you once they sold you something. For instance you take your truck in for an oil change and they figure 30 minutes to change. I remember watching through the window and they sure made it last 30 minutes when it only should take them like 10 minutes. Same for alot of other things they just figure a time frame and either take up all the time while you wait, or not take up all the time but yet charge you as if they did.
I had to have a head replaced on my truck told me 2-3 days. It took 3 days, 2 days sitting outside waiting for the guy to get back from vacation and 1 day to actually do. Of course they charged Ford for all 3 days.
