No Downshifting While driving uphill

Does anyone have this prob going uphills with/without a load, it does it about 50% of the time, just wont down shift into the kickass sorta gear, seems to sit ther and bog and cant make up its damn mind. Never used to do it, got about 26,000km no change in the trans oil yet. Could use a bit of advise plz, would a shift kit elimante this prob?

Like you said mine seems to do the same thing about 50 % of the time. In the past on some trucks I have been able to completly let off then get back on it and it will dowshift to low. That doesn't always work on my 97 4.6 with the 4R70W.
My fluid was flushed and changed about 4,000 miles ago and that wasn't the problem. I was thinking it might be the TPS as it can cause similar problems and did almost the same thing on dads 94 5.0. Other than that your looking at a ton of other things that might be hard to find.solve. I am kinda thinking it's in the valve body, like with a shift solenoid, or a worn passage way or something. I want a nearby Aamco to look at it but it's hard to do with out my truck for a full day.

I have 265's on mine but changed to a 19 tooth VSS gear(vs OE 20). I might also have low MPG and not sure how that might fit into the picture yet.
Right now it's just annoying but I'll drive it till it breaks or I find what it is. So far it still runs pretty good.

TPS

On my 92 with the E40D I thought it was the tranny but come to find out it was the Throttle Postioning Sensor by the throttle body. I do not know if yours has one of these or not but it was only like $50 and easy to put on.

downshift

Don't rule out the kick down linkage/cable.On ford aod trans.
if this cable isn't adjusted properly or came off this will happen
and will burn the trans up.I know a few people that has had this happen.I have 98 exp. and I don't have any problems with it kicking down.

And it doesn't have a kickdown cable, either. Those went away YEARS ago! Transmissions are electronically controlled now.

I know it doesn't have a capable but could a bad range sensor or connection to the transmission cause an intermentent problem like this?

Mines did fine for the past 3 days, downshifts perfect, other times it doesn't. I'm still betting there worn accumaltors, springs, and solenoids.

Same problem here

Without towing I'm having a similar problem with my 2002 F-150 4x4, 4.6, ATX. The problem is very intermittent, sometimes the tranny will work fine for a few days and other times it does it all day...anyway, my trans will go from 1st to O.D. in about 3 seconds and stay there, this is at about 15 MPH, and will not downshift unless I slam the pedal to the floor, then she goes back to 3rd, but still bogging.

I did another test drive with a ford service mechanic again yesterday because the previous days attempt to display the problem revealed nothing. The mechanic attached an error code reader to the truck and monitor for error codes during the test run, though the tranny did act up, the reader didn't show any errors, so the sensors (in my case) are not the issue.

The tech is leaning towards the PCM, but doesn't want to start swapping parts out just yet, so I guess my truck will now become a diagnostic ginny pig for this problem.

The service manger called a head factory engineer at one of the ford plants and he's stumped...

...Why do I get the feeling that this is going to be a long, long process?

Another idea someone had was; for some reason the PCM is telling the trans to change shift pattern as if it where in 4 wheel drive low, hence the quick shifting.

I'll post the findings...

Bob
