Rear seal fallout
Rear seal fallout
Hi to all!
'01 S_crew,4.6l, trans unknown.
I was on my first long road trip and had less than 10,000 miles
on it. Was running 90 - 100 mph for a while and noticed smoke.
Pulled off the fwy and saw trans fluid dripping out.
I reseated the seal Macguyver style and added 3 1/2 qt.s of fluid.
I am at 16,887 and have not had any more problems with the seal.
I am wondering if anyone else has experienced the same problem.
P.S. There was no noticeable vibration , noise or slippage to indicate a problem.
Fly low, Greg

There's a TSB for this sort of thing on the 1997-2000 F150's and F-250's with 2WD and 139" wheel base. The Supercrew's are not covered but if it's the 4R70W transmission, I suppose it could have the same problem.
What happens is that if you go really, really fast, (I'm thinking that Ford's idea of fast is 70mph) a driveshaft with the slightest amount of imbalance will shake the transmission output shaft enough that the seal and bushing can come out of the rear of the transmisison extention housing.
I have a little list of 29 current and former f150online members that this has happened to.
The TSB and some fine examples are here:

Extreme case:

Thanks AJ
It seems like most of the others noticed some vibration before
the seal came out. I didn't and thats what has me addled.
It is possible that there was an unnoticeable vibration.
My baby was running just as smooth at 90 as she was at 65.
I will have the dealer check it when they replace the serpentine belt and tensioner.
Thanks again, Greg

I was thinking the same thing; that it's a little odd that you didn't get a vibration. Who know what happened.
I really do think it's great that the extention housing ends right above the exhaust pipe so that you can see the smoke when a leak starts
