Question Over Drive On/Off?

Hello to all,

I was just wondering if I should turn my overdrive off when I am towing? I was told that if you tow with O.D. on it will burn out sooner. What do y'all think?

Thanks in advance,

I tow a pretty heavy boat (7000 +) and I leave it on. No problems hunting at all and it just shifts where it needs to be. Stock I'm not sure what it would do. Check your owners manual too.

If it doesn't frequently shift in and out of overdrive you can tow in overdrive. It is designed to be able to tow in overdrive.

This is just what I do........ Not saying that it's the only way, but works for me.....

Doesn't matter if I'm towing or not. When running around town, I leave the OD off. I hate it when it'll shift into OD when I take my foot off the gas to coast (even going just 35 mph). Then, put your foot into it again, and it'll shift back into 3rd.

When running on the highway, I'll turn the OD on and as long as it stays there on it's own, I just leave it there, again, towing or not.

If I go up a hill and it downshifts on it's own, I turn it off until I reach the top. This is so that I can let up some on the gas (after it's in third and I start to gain speed again) and it won't shift back into OD, only to bog down again and shift back.......

To me, this just lessons the number of times it's shifting up and down. That's what they mean when it's "hunting" for a gear. I just eliminate that whole issue by keeping it off when I know I don't need it. Been doing that for the 20k miles I've owned my rig.

When towing, the only time it ever goes into OD is when it's flat and I'm at a steady speed anyway. I don't mind the shifting at that point, but I'll keep it off if it won't stay for more then a couple miles at a time......

It all depends on where you are driving if it is very flat you can leave the OD on but if your going through hills and mountians then you will need to turn it off because it will keep changing between 3rd and overdrive
