Tranny crapped around 112mph!!!
OK Guys ready for this,
Well I was driving to my girlfriends house and I had a friend in the truck, we passed this acura with a huge coffee can for an exhaust...we went a few miles and then he caught up with us...he tried to pass me and I was not going to stand for that, so I punched it and off we were..suprisling he stayed with me till my spedo stopped at 100 then he started to fall behind...when I wa accelerating i noticed a quick hum from the whole truck then it went away real fast....just like when you go too fast with 108mph rated tires...well anyways i drove for about another 10 minutes and then puled over at a taco bell and let my friend out to get in his car...at that time I noticed a strong smell of good ole' mercon V
not what I wanted to smell...my rearend was covered, my shocks and exhaust was covered...and I was leaking like no other!!! ahh...so I looked with my mag lite and saw the tailshaft seal sitting on the yoke, at least an inch away...and with fluid dripping out...
Does anyone know why the seal would pop out, was that the vibration...I dont know...but the truck is sitting in a taco bell lot tonight till I get a new seal and get to change it.
How hard is the seal to change on these trucks..I assume I drop the driveshaft and then pull out the yoke, well ASSuME at least..
has anyone else had this happen??

Same happened to me. I had a driveshaft imbalance that forced the bearing and seal out of the trans. I suggest getting a new tailshaft housing (better ones are available from Ford) These improved units help reduce the vibration/drone some F150's have. I replaced the bearing and seal for the tune of $6 and loctited the bearing in. However the truck developed a drone at 68MPH that was caused by the tailshaft housing. I then had Ford install a new tailshaft housing. (the part is around $135).
This fixed the drone.
however the trans went out shortly thereafter, with a broken one way clutch. So I now have a rebuilt unit installed that has the drone again, and at 30-40 MPH too!

Well the tail shaft housing costed me 68 dollars, the slip yoke costed me 46 dollars and the gasket was 8, and the u joints were 30 a piece...I get all of my parts from ford at their cost....great friend...I'm picking my truck up right now to bring it back to my shop to work on it...Ill post tonight on what happened and if it is fixed...I guess after 112k it is allowed to happen...and it was worth the win against the rice car...otherwise it would of happened on another heavy foot day..lol Thanks all..

Well the leaky seal is fixed.....after I tore it all apart I found that the race in the tailshaft is what pushed out, and in return pushed the seal out....thus leaking...and with less fluid and lots of friction the slip yoke was scarred up, and it hurt the tail housing a little...after 3 hours and a little help from "pops" the housing was replaced and the new seal was in and I had even changed the U-joints...those damn u-joints are quite large..at least on the 9.75 rear end setup...but it all working properly and I will re torque the housing bolts after a week or soo...I this ever happens to any of YALL, and you have some knowledge of tools and parts...do it ur self and save some money....well unless it is under warranty, unlike mine with 112k..lol

Well I'll for sure find out as time goes by...I did not want to take anychances with the scarred up slip yoke or the chipped housing, only the best for my truck..lol
And Mach1 I never realized till now u own my favorite car of all times.. I have "3" 69's all Mach 1's, all with 351c's, the only down fall is that they are not quite mine to do what I want with till my uncle dies...that sounds bad but I will get them when he passes, and they are all green, one was a little wrecked, he hit a cow at 80. They are all in Oklahoma, one is still in the same spot it has been in fro 15 years...I have one hell of a project later on...lol

The 69 DID NOT come from the factory with the 351 cleve...
they did not do that until 70.....
The guy I bought ming from did the conversion...luckily he kept the original 390 and C6...which I have....
Mine is a project car as well, I used to race it autocross...it would beat up the other fox bodies of the late 80's...
These are excellent cars...and excellent trucks...

I am not for sure how many of the parts are still in his garage, he does have one Mach1 in the garage that he tried to restore and it is in the best shape, but about 10 years ago he just quit, he was running out of money and as you know you can sink alot of dead presidents into a restore...I am fighting with my cousin for the Mach 1's ...he had been asking for them for longer but he likes me more, hell I will be happy with the two worst ones....my uncle had changed out the motors in them along with the trannys, they all have 4 speeds too, but stock or not I REALLY want these cars, I think they look so damn sweet, is yours a fastback, or were they all fastbacks....otherwise his are fastbacks, from what he said... take care mach1
