shifting into 5th

for all of u with the 4.2 v6 5 speed f150 i got a question for ya..... when shifting into 5th going about 50 mph when u let off the clutch to engage 5th do u hear a slight clinking noise, or jerking noise.... its not really noticeable but i can hear it with the radio volume all the way down and if im actually trying to hear it.... i think it may be because im not going fast enough to engage 5th smoothly because i sometimes shift into 4th at 50 instead of 5th.... well just curious.... thanx fellaz

Got a 97 4.2 w/5-speed and had the tranny replaced at 52,000 and just turned 60,000 original miles and had no problems with 5th gear in either tranny, but still have a 1st to 2nd grind when cold!

you sure its the tranny

Thats sounds like it could actually be the u-joints in your drive shaft.

I think it sounds normal. Mine does the same thing when I'm driving in a "leisurely" way. People have said that this is a "notchy" transmission. The sound seems like it's coming from the transmission it's self, right?
I think it's just the gear engauging. That's just me though.
It's good that you knotice the noises. Some wouldn't even question it!

Good luck!
Tom
